On how Ben-Gurion helped Germany rebrand (the political history of the term “Nazi Germany”)

The 1930s have never been more relevant when considering the rise of #fascism in the United States under #Trump. While “Nazi Germany” serves as convenient shorthand, this terminology is misleading. #Hitler’s government was popular with most Germans, collaboration was widespread [the #Gestapo (today’s #ICE if you will) relying on voluntary informants since it had only one officer per 10,000 citizens], and meaningful resistance was virtually absent. After 1945, two-thirds of those hired to work in Adenauer’s Chancellery had previously belonged to the Nazi party, and #denazification officially ended in 1951 with former #Nazis returning to positions of influence.

The term “Nazi Germany” itself became a political tool. Originally popularized by German exiles in the 1930s, it was not used within #Germany and was only brought back after World War II . During the 1961 #Eichmann trial, Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion strategically weaponized this linguistic distinction. Fearing the trial would “ignite a wave of hatred of Germany among the Israeli public” and become “an obstacle to receiving economic aid from Germany,” Ben-Gurion insisted that accusations focus on “Nazi Germany, and not on the entire German nation or the Germany of 1961” .

In a March 28, 1961 letter to prosecutor Gideon Hausner, Ben-Gurion explicitly demanded the use of “Nazi Germany” rather than “Germany” alone “in order to distinguish between Germany in the past and that of the present”. This semantic sleight of hand served both Israeli economic interests and West Germany’s rehabilitation, allowing Adenauer’s government, filled with former Nazis, to claim a clean break from the past.

What value is there in historically researching the concept of cultural genocide if one doesn’t resist it in real time?

Bilsky’s book, published in May 2024, makes no mention of #Gaza—despite the fact that by then, the #IDF had systematically destroyed universities, archives, libraries, mosques, and churches across the Strip. For a book devoted entirely to theorizing cultural genocide, the silence is not merely an oversight but a refusal to confront what the author’s own framework describes.

Bilsky’s subject is cultural genocide - destroying a people’s language, culture, and collective memory, not just their bodies. She analyzes how the #Eichmann trial suppressed this understanding, despite four key figures who recognized it: Raphael Lemkin (who coined “genocide”), Yiddish poet Abraham Sutzkever, historian Salo Baron, and testimony-collection pioneer Rachel Auerbach.

Aber das hat @clarabuenger gar nicht getan. Sie hat Dobrindts Umgang mit afghanischen Flüchtlingen als rechtswidrig und empathielos angeprangert.

Dieses Wegschieben der Verantwortung für drohende Menschenrechtsverletzungen aus bürokratischen Gründen ("geerbtes Problem abarbeiten") als "Politik der Banalität des Bösen" zu bezeichnen, ist absolut angemessen.

Sehr schön, dass wir hier jetzt „aus erster Hand“ die Information haben, dass Max Kahane natürlich dieselbe Meinung hatte, die dann zwei Jahre später als Erklärung der jüdischen Bürger noch einmal im ND, dessen Chefkommentator Kahane ja zu der Zeit war, veröffentlicht wurde. Propagandatechnisch hätte es überhaupt keinen Sinn ergeben, wenn Max Kahane in seinem eigenen Blatt ein Dokument mit unterzeichnet hätte.

Es folgt, dass Leon Kahane die Vergangenheit seiner Familie wohl noch einmal neu überdenken muss und wahrscheinlich auch sein Verständnis von #Antisemitismus. Ansonsten müsste er wohl zu dem Schluss kommen, dass sein jüdischer Großvater, der in Frankreich im Widerstand gegen die #Nazis gekämpft hat und aus #Israel vom #Eichmann-Prozess berichtet hatte, ein Antisemit war.

Germany suspended all military and financial assistance to Israel during the trial of Adolf #Eichmann (that took place in Jerusalem from April 11 to August 13, 1961,) explicitly conditioning renewal on how the trial was conducted. Once Ben-Gurion successfully managed the trial without damaging Germany's image, #Adenauer expressed gratitude and #Peres secured significant military equipment as compensation.

[...] Ben-Gurion knew that the Germans were very worried about the trial, as he wrote in his diary, and apparently also knew that they were following every statement that might harm them, so he was also careful not to make statements during the trial period. They applied heavy pressure on Israel and froze all commitments for arms deals, reparations and the loan for the Negev project, and made clear that they would renew the agreements 'according to what would be said in the trial.' At the end of the trial, Deputy Defense Minister Shimon Peres met with Chancellor Adenauer, and the latter asked to convey thanks to his dear friend Ben-Gurion for having managed the trial well. West Germany's first installment of 200 million marks annually for the reactor came August 14, 1961 - one day after the trial ended. Final approval came June 8, 1962, only after the trial concluded.

Another noteworthy fact: Ben-Gurion knew West German official Hans Globke had drafted the legal framework for the Nuremberg Laws that enabled Jewish deportation and extermination, but told German representatives: 'There is no need to speak of Globke, because Adenauer investigated his past before accepting him as advisor better than Israel could have investigated.'"

Apropos investment in Israel’s economy, science and military, in the 1960s #Germany used #Holocaust guilt to justify funding Israel's nuclear program while demanding the #Eichmann trial not implicate ordinary Germans in genocide. Today's Europe uses "shared values" rhetoric to justify continued research cooperation.

Ben-Gurion insisted on "Nazi Germany" versus "Germany" to protect German sensibilities and secure nuclear funding. Today's discussions about Horizon Europe carefully avoid confronting Europe's role in enabling Israeli capabilities used against Palestinians. The program has provided Israeli institutions with billions in research funding, much of which has enhanced dual-use technologies, surveillance systems, and military applications now deployed in Gaza and the West Bank.

IMHO Suspending Horizon Europe participation wouldn't just be about current Israeli actions - it would force Europe to confront how its historical and ongoing support has made those actions possible. The current framing avoids this uncomfortable truth about European complicity.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Maybe the solution is to encourage brain drain. Support Israeli scientists who will come and work in Europe, make them sign a cooling-off period preventing them from working with any industry complicit, supporting or enabling the occupation in any way. The world will benefit from continued investment in research, and #Israel will be left to deal with the consequences of adopting messianic #Zionism.

Regardless, polling shows that most Israelis support the continued occupation, and now more than ever, they also support population transfer - I believe the figure is around 86% of the Jewish population. There's little reason to assume that scientists and academics are somehow exempt from these broader societal attitudes.
