On 1 October 2015, the 🇺🇲American cargo ship El Faro was lost with all 33 crew when it sailed into the eyewall of Hurricane Joaquin. The ship was owned by TOTE services and operated a regular route between Jacksonville, FL and San Juan, PR. Months later, the wreck was found 15,000 feet underwater near 🇧🇸The Bahamas. The voyage data recorder was found, shedding light on the circumstances on El Faro. The bridge was equipped with microphones and recorded all conversations. Captain Michael Davidson insisted on staying on course, refusing requests from his second mate Danielle Randolph to re-route the ship to avoid the storm. Negligent navigation by the captain, imperfect and delayed weather information, insufficient support from TOTE headquarters, obsolete safety equipment, and antiquated open life boats were all cited in NTSB and US Coast Guard reports. One of the last recorded voices on the voyage recorder was that of helmsman Frank Hamm, as he shouted, "I'm a goner!"
