UN Agency reports that carbon emissions for major tech companies ballooned in the 3 years 2020-2023:
Amazon grew 182%
Microsoft 155%
Meta 145%
Alphabet 138%

AI/LLMs were major contributors to the increases.

Digital companies used 581 TWh electricity in 2024, about 2.1% of global demand.

Following up on an earlier post about how energy-intensive generative AI/LLMs are, here's news about how Google is supporting the development of three nuclear power plants (locations TBD), which should produce 1.8 gigawatts of energy.

Note that estimates say 50+ gigawatts of additional power generation will be needed by 2027 to support AI initiatives... :-(

"Global is expected to grow by 4% each year through 2027, the IEA said in a report on Friday."

Low-emissions energy sources such as renewables and nuclear are expected to match global demand growth trends as they continue to edge out coal's share in the power mix, the report said."
