🌴💻🌊NatureWare #01: Night Swimming by André Sier, 20251102,03 🌿

What if algorithms could swim? Green lasers, full moon, Atlantic waves breeze — generative night swimming physics projected on cliff and sea. We took our code to the beach 🌊Full moon up. Lasers out. Generative humanoids bathing like underwater ghosts — physics, chaos, oceanic beauty in ondulatory motion.

Night Swimming by André Sier launches NatureWare, a new cycle of live electronic arts in wild nature, produced by artecodigo.pt. No gallery. No screens. Just sound, light, code, electronics and electromagnetic waves talking to nature and natureware talking back.

⚙️ Tech Data
Laser mapping projection by ArteCódigo
Physics-based stochastics swimming software: C++/Python custom engine by André Sier
Sound: synaesthetic image to field recordings, laser control protocol, oceanic layers
Location: Portugal southern coast
Cycle: NatureWare #01 — ArteCódigo 2025

Here's my first permanent public artwork, "Periscopes." When you look through its bulbous lenses, you see scenes that might seem faraway, such as heron stalking their prey; but all of the footage was filmed (by me) within 10mi of its site at Buzzard Point in southwest Washington, D.C., USA.

I worked with a team to install this artwork yesterday. Steelwork by Steven R. Jones.

#MastoArt #electronicart

In a brick-lined planter along a quiet breezeway, two periscope-like grey pipes erupt from the ground like brontosauruses. They each are painted industrial grey and are roughly person-sized. From this angle, the closer "Periscope" reveals a bulbous screen that is displaying a watery natural scene. From a few feet away, their setting is more apparent. They are at two different heights, pointed, as if curious creatures, in two different directions.A close-up view shows another natural scene, this time showing a swamp. There is a hood over the end of the artwork, akin to a traffic light or signal. It has big chunky bolts.A side view shows the artwork's proximity to a central square within its host development.

Phew! #ObliquePalette prototype 0.5.5 (the ninth prototype in two years — one of them wasn’t built because we found a catastrophic error last moment) looks to be ready for manufacturing! Things could actually be correct here!

Really looking forward to teaching #programming and #sounddesign and #computerart with Oblique technologies! I want to see what patches people integrate into their #eurorack rigs! I want to see robots & environmental control!

The front of the device, designed to interface Eurorack (and other electronic experiments) with the plugdata patching language.

There’s a row of eight output channels on top with level LEDs, female headers for Arduino/discrete electronics, and male headers for servo output.

There’s are eight knobs in the bottom row, along with 3.5mm “aux” jacks and female headers.

In the upper right is the Oblique Industries logo, a small bitmap portrait of Susan Kare, and “palette prototype 0.5.5”.The back of the board, showing where the Raspberry Pi Pico2 slots in, as well as the electronics for each input and output channel.

Couple of days ago Łasica (@weasel.jfif) unveiled their soldering kits, a perfect fusion of art and technology. It's a striking reminder that Łasica is also the brilliant mind behind our stunning mural!

A close-up, slightly angled shot of a moth-shaped circuit board on a white grid background. The board is dark gray with gold-colored conductive traces. The top of the moth's head has two small, horn-like protrusions. The body of the moth has a rectangular gold area near the top, followed by a series of white lines forming a simple circuit diagram. Below the diagram, there is a copyright symbol, the year '2024', and the text '@weasel.jfif' and '@rough.rat'. The wings of the moth have small gold squares and circles at various points, indicating connection points. A small white object is visible in the upper left corner, slightly out of focus. The photo shows two assembled PCB (Printed Circuit Board) art pieces lying on an open book with cream-colored pages. On the left is a moth-shaped PCB with visible electronic traces and components. The board is dark with yellow and white patterns resembling abstract blobs and lines. The moth's eyes are illuminated with red LEDs. On the right is an irregular star-shaped PCB with sharp edges, also showing visible electronic traces and components. It's dark with gold patterns and has red LEDs at several points, resembling eyes. Both PCB art pieces lie on the cream-colored background of the book's pages, and a fragment of an orange object is visible in the upper right corner.A flat-lay shot of a partially assembled moth-shaped PCB (Printed Circuit Board) kit on a light grid background. The PCB is dark with gold and white patterns resembling abstract designs, showing visible electronic traces. To the left of the PCB are several small components: a surface-mount button, a through-hole button, a clear plastic bag containing a round, silver battery, a small metal battery holder, and a silver safety pin. In the upper right corner, there is a white plastic component, possibly a battery holder or connector. The components are neatly arranged, indicating a DIY or assembly kit.The photo shows an assembled moth-shaped PCB lying on a light grid background. The moth has a black body with gold and white patterns, and its eyes are illuminated with blue LEDs. In the upper part of the photo, there is a red UNI-T UT116C multimeter with black probes ending in gold tips, which are pointed downwards towards the moth. A thin black wire comes out of the lower part of the multimeter probes and runs towards the moth. In the upper left corner, there is a small, transparent bag with small components.
