Attached is the main part of a summer 1856 medical journal advertisement for Dr. Taylor's Water Cure Establishment. The second item is my commentary on the ad plus information about the early development of physical therapy in the United States. If you are interested in the histories of physical therapy and massage therapy, my posts (TribeOfJesse) at FamilySearch.org under the names of George Herbert Taylor and George Henry Patchen in the Sources sections may be worth your while to look through. For some reason, the Person record for Dr. George H. Taylor are hard to find at FamilySearch. The easiest thing is to search on the name of his son, William George Langworthy Taylor of Lincoln, Nebraska, and then link to the father. FamilySearch can be a bit hard to use until one gets used to it. Search on a person's name and in the Results list many entries have something like a decorated < symbol. Clicking on it ought to lead to a Person record. My most numerous and extensive posts are under the Sources heading. Click on a Sources entry and it ought to expand considerably. The present entry is under the year 1856 and has the title, "Swedish Movement Cure Department at Dr. Taylor's Water Cure, Summer 1856." None of these words should throw you. It is not an article about hydropathy but rather a post about early physical therapy. Incidentally, Dr. George Henry Patchen went on to become the medical theoretician of chiropractic. W.G. Langworthy Taylor wrote a 1937 textbook about spiritualism titled "Immortality." Dr. Charles F. Taylor's grandson, also named Charles Fayette Taylor, was one of the most important pioneers of aviation. A lot of brilliant people were in this Taylor line.

I’ve just read about a set of David Hume’s letters being auctioned, and I have to say that were I ridiculously wealthy, I would absolutely spend all my money making sure things like this were safely archived in museums where people could see them, and where they would be protected from the elements and ravages of time.
He was such an extraordinary writer, his snide turns of phrase, his elegant dismissal of the external divine, his belief that humanity was humanity’s greatest hope and enemy. These were letters to a friend, and they stayed in that family from the 1700s until now. I hope the purchaser puts, at the very least, archival copies of the letters online, so we can read them.

I don't want faith. I can't do anything of any use with faith. I want to believe true things. Faith has no criteria of determining what is and what isn't true, and this is evident in the fact that you can believe anything on faith, whether true or untrue. Empiricism (please look up this word) only allows you to believe things that can be observed or experimented on, i.e., things that can be proven to be true.

The main idea behind the Theme One program is the efficient use of graph‑theoretic data structures for the tasks of “learning” and “reasoning”.

I am thinking of “learning” in the sense of learning about an environment, in essence, gaining information about the nature of an environment and being able to apply the information acquired to a specific purpose.

Under the heading of “reasoning” I am simply lumping together all the ordinary sorts of practical activities which would probably occur to most people under that name.

There is a natural relation between the tasks. Learning the character of an environment leads to the recognition of laws which govern the environment and making full use of that recognition requires the ability to reason logically about those laws in abstract terms.
