As the world drowns in #Plastic, countries have met in #Ottawa to negotiate the #PlasticTreaty last week.
#Rwanda and #Peru put forward the first concrete proposal to #EndPlasticPollution, to cut down by 40% by 2040, from a 2025 baseline.
What's happening at the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations in Ottawa?
According to the Center for International Environmental Law, 196 representatives of fossil fuel and chemical companies registered to attend. That's three times more than the number of independent scientists (58), and seven times more than the number of Indigenous Peoples representatives (28).

A summary of many of the ways plastics are threatening us with pollution. And so many of the applications of plastics developed in my lifetime - so clearly there are viable alternatives to disposable plastics. Even better - there are alternative products that are easy to use, easier to transport (less volume and weight)., and in many cases, reusable products.
At the same time, there are essential uses of polymers - in biomedical applications, in some engineering applications - so the immediate challenge is moving away from the myriad (but highly profitable & highly polluting) products where alternatives exist.

Countries in the global north should find better solutions to their waste problems instead of exporting it to the global south.
No country should be using another as a dumping ground for its waste.
