Recently, I've taken it upon myself to try to influence the English language teaching industry to take a stand to represent and support the #LGBTQIA community.

I started an open letter, and gathered over 300 signatures from those within the industry, to try to urge organisations to take a stand.

I then emailed nine organisations at the beginning of April – to which I received one reply (the one that I thought would reply, as they do a lot of work on socials in support of the community).

One of my friends and colleagues nudged another organisation called NATECLA, and today they responded publicly.

Change starts from within.

#EnglishLanguageTeaching #ELT #ESOL #RepresentationMatters #IAmNotATaboo

(Alt description was too long: here's the end of it:

We are more than happy to sign this open letter. We’d also encourage our members and others who work within the sector (and Adult Education more generally) to do so.)

Screenshot from NATECLA website:
NATECLA: Supporting our LGBTQIA+ colleagues and learners.

NATECLA has always championed inclusive ESOL and Community Languages provision, and especially the need for teaching, learning and assessment materials that reflect learners’ diverse realities whilst offering insights into differing life experiences and perspectives.

We applaud this challenge from Peter J Fullagar, LGBTQIA+ champion in the English Language Teaching sector to publishers, awarding organisations, institutions and all who work within ESOL and the wider arena of our sector to reflect on how LGBTQIA+ peoples are represented and reflected in materials and classroom discourses. Peter rightly points out that the sector is all too often complicit in upholding prejudice, discrimination and misinformation about LGBTQIA+ people and identities, as well as perpetuating falsehoods that these are ‘not normal’, ‘invalid or ‘taboo’.

Given the recent fallout from the UK Supreme Court judgement and interim guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) for England, Scotland and Wales (and since it’s Trans+ History Week from 5-11 May), we’d particularly emphasise the importance of ensuring trans, non-binary and gender diverse ESOL learners and practitioners are welcomed, affirmed, accepted, included and treated with dignity.

Happy #LGBTQHistoryMonth (UK) and #BlackHistoryMonth (US)!

Day 1, I want to share this podcast video I was lucky enough to do with Laura Wilkes of TESOL Pop.

I plan to share various things through the month - but remember, it’s #NotJustAMonth!

I'm really pleased with the reaction to LGBTQIA+ Identities in ELT: A Practical Guide: Updated!

There's been a flurry of downloads of it from the website, and that makes me really happy! So, thank you if you're one of the people who've downloaded it.

Remember, it's FREE to download and has the basics of representing the Queer community in English Language resources.

I’m still learning about the #Fediverse.

I’m wondering how the Fediverse feels about being a place for #freelancers and #SmallBusinessOwners to do business and sell products, services, etc. particularly those in #Education.

Due to leaving platforms like #Instagram and #Facebook, I’ve lost two potential revenue streams - not that I made a lot of revenue anyway!

I know I need to shout about my #Inclusive #EnglishLanguageTeaching materials more (I’ve never been all that great at marketing myself). I also need to use @iamnotataboo
more, but that’s more for building community.
Perhaps more people within my industry need to get on to the Fediverse.

A lot of #ELT people are now on #Bluesky, but personally I prefer #Mastodon, and looks likely I’ll love #Pixelfed too.

Would love to know others’ thoughts on this, particularly freelancers or #SoleTraders who use the Fediverse.

Very excited about this forthcoming publication – Queer Studies in English Language Education.

Quite a few people I know have contributed to this, and I'm excited both for them, and for the ELT industry to see what it has to say!

It's being published towards the end of January 2025.

Very happy to introduce 'Circumstances', my new LGBTQIA+-inclusive ELT resource.

This is aimed at CEFR B1 level students and looks at the past perfect, but also introduces pansexuality. The lesson plan doesn't contain a deep dive of what it means to be pan (as I don't have lived experience of that), but aims to raise awareness of the sexuality in a usualised way, followed by some deeper thinking.

You may have seen my email, if you're subscribed, with a discount code for 'Circumstances', but I want to try out a new price point. My original resources will remain free, but I've amended the price of my single resources. I'd welcome feedback on this – is it too cheap, too expensive or just right?

Once again, thanks for all the support – do feel free to share and/or comment on this post.

It was about time I pulled out a quote from the Existence review.
Although I've been having a difficult time recently and questioning many things, I'm still immensely proud of Existence – potentially the ONLY #LGBTQIA+ #ELT resource around.

Pink background with rainbow coloured paint splashes in 2 corners, and a logo of PJF with a rainbow umbrella. Text says: ... the existence of “Existence” is in itself an invaluable contribution to ELT materials since, for a change, it makes LGBTQIA+ people―in all their colours, shapes, sizes, abilities, origins, economic situations―visible and, therefore, conceived of as worthy in the eyes of others and in their own. I don't think I'm very good at marketing myself.

Or rather, marketing the stuff and products I've made.

So, this time, I'm shouting about We were living, the newest resource in my collection.
Can you tell I haven't used AI for this?

Oh, and by the way, AI was not used to create this resource.

Or any of my resources.

We were living is available to buy and download from my website shop.

Thanks to John for recommending 'Straight Jacket' to be put on the resources section of I am not a taboo! I've now put it on the website, and strangely enough, my physical copy of the book arrived today too – so I'll be looking forward to reading that.

What recommendations, particularly for LGBTQIA+ education or queer ELT would you give?

I wrote this blog post for CUP for Pride month 2023.

When it was shared on social media, the amount of vitriol, hate and homophobia was, although not surprising, incredible. From fellow ELT teachers. Bigotry is everywhere.
