🪳 Graphosome italien 🇮🇹

There are few soil animals as adorable as springtails!

This Platunurida sp. is a cousin of the famous 'giant' springtails in New Zealand. Instead of colourful spines, it has a flattened body, so it can squeeze into cracks in decaying logs, where it lives. They're surprisingly fast at escaping into the cracks, so it's difficult to get a good photo of them!

📸 Punaise au studio 📸

Rhyparochromus vulgaris, potentiellement visible toute l'année.

fenstermücke der gattung sylvicola, welche art genau ist nicht zu sagen, ich zitiere: "Possibly S. fenestralis but could also be S. cinctus or female S. zetterstedti. The differences between these species are only in the structures of the genitalia"

Collage showing insects attracted to light and automatically imaged 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours after sunset in Aranda, ACT, Australia on the night of 6 to 7 Dec 2025. The image includes four smaller images collected around the listed times. Each image shows a section of sheet with a variable number of insects attracted to UV and visible light. Number and variety depends on time of year and conditions during the given night. The image is also labeled with basic details of the associated weather and moon phase. Does anyone know why scuttle flies (Phoridae) have these aggressive/well-developed maxillary palps?

@BobLefridge Me too. It turns out it’s commonly called “bubbling” and lots of bees do it. The Hyleas bees I saw yesterday were sitting on leaves in the sun by the flowers and slowly drawing the nectar bubble in and out of their mouth.

I found this recent review paper on the behaviour. “ Nectar concentrating has various purposes, including preparation for long-term storage in hives, modification before adding to larval provisions, removal of excess water for efficient storage in the crop, thermoregulation, and potentially for nest construction.”

Probably not bees. Likely to be wasps such as yellow jackets. #Entomology

Here are some of the insects I photographed on my weekly "run" through Christchurch city, NZ, today. I say "run" because I carry a camera and there are often good excuses to stop and photograph critters.

There was an admiral caterpillar eating European nettles (probably a yellow admiral but a bit young to be sure): inaturalist.nz/observations/32

European woolcarder bees are active again now, and they prefer purple flowers, so there are lots on the purple toadflax flowering in the city: inaturalist.nz/observations/32

Several of the flowering NZ flaxes had native Hyaeus masked bees on the them. I'm not sure why they regurgitate balls of nectar. inaturalist.nz/observations/32

The iridescent long-legged Parentia flies were out on the prowl looking for something smaller than them to catch and eat: inaturalist.nz/observations/32

A photo of my handing hold a nettle leaf with a small, black spiky caterpillar. It's probably an Australasian yellow admiral, since NZ red admirals don't like this host plant as much, although the two species are hard to tell apart when this young.A photo of a yellow and dark grey bee visiting an inflorescence of small purple flowers.A photo of a small black bee with yellow markings on its face. It's sitting on a lead and it's got a ball of nectar in its mandibles that it was drawing in and out of its mouth (why I don't yet understand).A photo of a small, long-legged fly with iridescent green body and an iridescent sheen to its wings. These little flies are predators of other even smaller insects.

There are dozens of Inuit words for snow. The Japanese have 2000 for rain - Miya Ando's Dictionary of 2,000 Japanese Rain Words.
