nahaufnahme, makro, quadratischer ausschnitt. an einer weiß gestrichenen hauswand hängt eine wanze mit sehr typischer körperform, flach, gedrungen und wappenschildförmig. farblich ist sie eher unauffällig, der hellbeige untergrund ist so dicht mit sehr kleinen braunen und schwarzen pünktchen bedeckt, dass nur geringe teile unbedeckt bleiben, alle recht verstreut verteilt, an manchen stellen mehr braune, anderswo mehr schwarze, insgesamt entsteht ein eindruck den ich sandig nennen würde. der halsschild ist deutlich aufgewölbt, das dreieckige schildchen dahinter ist recht groß und hat eine hellere, abgerundete spitze. auch auf den hellen transparenten hautflügeln die dahinter herausschauen sind pünktchen, etwas spärlicher. der käfer hält sein rechtes hinterbein ziemlich weit nach vorne, bis ans mittlere, so dass es erst so aussieht als fehle ihm dieses hinterbein, aber das täuscht.

makro, extreme nahaufnahme. mitten in einer kreisrunden, wohl von einem pilz verursachten schwärzlichen verfärbung auf der unterseite eines blattes sitzt ein nur wenige millimeter großer marienkäfer. er hat die typische form einer nur leicht länglichen halbkugel, eines halben rotationsellipsiods. der eindruck ist hier sogar noch stärker als bei anderen marienkäfern, weil sich kopf und halsschild nicht farblich von den flügeldecken absetzen. es ist dadurch sogar gar nicht ganz einfach zu erkennen wo vorne und hinten ist. apropos farblich, die grundfarbe ist ein etwas gedämpftes gelborange, die ist auch nicht ganz sauber, es sieht aus als sei der käfern mit leicht öligen mechaniker*innen-fingern angefasst worden. das passt auch zu dem schwarzen fleck unter ihm, aber das ist eigentlich zufall, wenn es auch die schmieröl-assoziation vertstärkt. dann sind da noch recht große fast weiße punkte oder flecken, polka dots, nicht ganz rund mit nicht ganz scharf begrenzten rändern, 16 an der zahl, 8 pro flügeldecke.

ein insekt sitzt an der gezahnten kante eines brennnesselblattes und blickt hinunter. es ist unauffällig mittelbraun gefärbt und hat leicht durchscheinende, geäderte hautflügel mit abgerundeten spitzen so seitlich an den körper angelegt, dass nach hinten eine senkrecht stehende finne ensteht. am thorax sind einige kurze borstige haare. vom kopf mit den kugeligen facettenaugen gehen 2 dunkelbraune fühler aus, gestreckt, leicht im bogen, fast so lang wie der rest vom tier, die nach vorne hin gleichmäßig immer dünner werden

nahaufnahme, quadratischer ausschnitt. eine große libelle klammert sich senkrecht an ein grasblatt, das lange dünne stabförmige hinterteil zeigt gerade nach unten. es ist schwarz mit verschieden großen kleinen türkis-blauen flecken besprenkelt. der sehr große, kräftige thorax - da sind die flugmuskeln drin - ist obenauf braun und hat seitlich, an der unteren flanke 2 diagonale grünlich-gelbe streifen. der kopf greift rund um die riesigen facettenaugen das türkis-blau wieder auf und ganz vorne das gelb. die großen, seitlich weg gestreckten flügel sind so filigran netz- und fachwerkartig geädert und transparent, dass sie kaum zu sehen sind. im hintergrund irgendwelche blätter vermutlich bodennaher pflanzen.

aufgenommen am freitag, habe ich mir das bild extra aufbewahrt für den #insektenSamstag , dann aber glatt vergessen es zu posten. es sei hiermit nachgereicht, zum #insektenSonntag :D

Watch out: the weather is warming and the American ragwort aphids are *multiplying*.

American ragwort aphids specialise on Senecio plants, of which NZ has many species, including some threatened endemic species.

The aphid arrived in NZ (somehow) in 2023, and has since got to work munching on our plants. The American aphids are also now being tended and protected by exotic Australian ants.

In the South Island these aphids are still restricted to Christchurch city (at least based on observations on #iNaturalist and #GBIF).

It would be great if you could keep a look out for them in other places. They're the only big black aphid in NZ (black bodies and legs).
