🐢Punaise tortue 🐢

This is the male genitalia of a dung beetle.

This is how entomologists flip the bird.

A hand is holding a tiny slip of paper. On it is a thin brown line, smaller than a grain of rice. Under a microscope, it would look like a cylindrical structure attached to a pair rectangular covers.

Collage showing insects attracted to light and automatically imaged 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours after sunset in Aranda, ACT, Australia on the night of 9 to 10 Dec 2025. The image includes four smaller images collected around the listed times. Each image shows a section of sheet with a variable number of insects attracted to UV and visible light. Number and variety depends on time of year and conditions during the given night. The image is also labeled with basic details of the associated weather and moon phase.

The fourth frame includes (as well as the wing of an Amata tiger-moth overlapping the camera) a male whistling-moth (Hecatesia fenestrata). It's a little under half-way across the frame and about a fifth of the way from the bottom (close to the #cicada)

These moths have an unscaled area of the wing that is ribbed and allows them to make a buzzing (not really whistling) noise as they fly. The ribbed areas apparently strike each other like castanets on the upbeat.

🪳 Graphosome italien 🇮🇹

There are few soil animals as adorable as springtails!

This Platunurida sp. is a cousin of the famous 'giant' springtails in New Zealand. Instead of colourful spines, it has a flattened body, so it can squeeze into cracks in decaying logs, where it lives. They're surprisingly fast at escaping into the cracks, so it's difficult to get a good photo of them!

📸 Punaise au studio 📸

Rhyparochromus vulgaris, potentiellement visible toute l'année.
