#ErgonomicKeyboard

2025-05-23

I'm on a roll, two blog posts about #ErgonomicKeyboard design this week!

This one is about some cool maths which has been used to design a #SplitMechanicalKeyboard and full #MechanicalKeyboard without diodes:

And earlier, about my custom #KeyboardLayout (which in hindsight might have fitted better on the hobby blog?):

I find the tenting feature on some split keyboards is pretty vital to prevent immediate wrist pain for me

Cheapest options that aren’t cool like the expensive/flashy or diy ones, so no hand-soldering (those can still cost hundreds of dollars):

The Goldtouch semi- has more stable tenting than 90% of split keyboards, and cost less than $100 used

Or the Targus Foldable on an eyeglasses case will let you test the split ergo water for $30

Old Goldtouch portable semi-split keyboard. Joined by a ball-joint at the peak near the 6-7 keys. The locking joint allows it to be moved and tented at any position and angle up to 30° as long as the boards don’t get too far apart. Targus foldable ergonomic keyboard. Extremely thin board opens like a book and here is opened over a glasses case so it forms a tent with each half of the keyboard on either side.

I’m belatedly getting into this geeky stickers on laptops thing - there are some on the outside too, but here’s my attempt at an #ErgonomicKeyboard #KeyboardLayout on my Japanese #MacBook 🇯🇵 ⌨️

Update: Blog post blastedbio.blogspot.com/2025/0

Photo looking down on a black Apple MacBook Japanese keyboard, with 34 luminous yellow stickers defining a split layout with R (backspace, shift) and space on thumbs, and home keys SNTH, AEIC (a variant of the inverted Hands Down Promethium layout).

The rest of an Apple USA English keyboard layout sticker sheet is lying on the trackpad, the number row and a few more punctuation keys

I am well and truly down the #ErgonomicKeyboard and alternative #KeyboardLayout “rabbit hole”now - touch typing this very slowly on a tweaked variant of the Hands Down Promethium layout which has R on a thumb key (which I started learning on a split keyboard), but directly on my laptop! github.com/peterjc/kana-chordi #JapaneseMacBook

If it wasn’t obvious from recent posts, I have fallen into the world of #ErgonomicKeyboard / #MechanicalKeyboard / #KeyboardLayouts

My #CorneKeyboard arrived from Ali Express this week, I've already tried one new layout, and just today I filed my first issue and pull request on a public repository related to this new “hobby”: github.com/aradzie/keybr.com/i

That's for the keybr.com/ touch-typing platform, and a very recent layout called #HandsDownPromethium which has the letter R and space on thumb keys.

Right now I am seriously tempted to spend ~£200 (~¥40,000) on a 32-key #FishKeyboard o24.works/fish/ having been reading the designer's blogs about their #OnishiLayout - probably a good thing it is currently sold out! 🤣 🐠⌨ #ErgonomicKeyboard

It only just occurred to me, but there’s a reason its the E key which is starting to fail on my #Microsoft4000 #ErgonomicKeyboard - its the most used letter in the English language (and I'm not a vi/vim user so no HJKL effect - my cursor keys get pounded instead, and thankfully are holding up fine).

I guess switching to Dvorak would be one “solution" (becomes `.>`) , or Colemak (becomes F).

#Keyboard fans on #macOS - is there an easy way to record keystroke usage counts? e.g. Like an extended version of this software which currently only does a grand total of all keys: github.com/MarcusDelvecchio/Ke

I want data on my existing usage while thinking about #KeyboardLayout, thumb keys, and #KeyboardLayers for the programable #CorneKeyboard #ErgonomicKeyboard I have ordered

Looks like #Incase will be resurrecting the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard LXM-00004 incase.com/collections/ergonom

However, I want something closer to the older Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 - comparative review at norphus.co.uk/2022/07/29/micro

I’m currently working on a video about my experience with ergonomic keyboards. In the video, I’ll talk about why I switched, the learning curve with my Kinesis Advantage 360 Pro, and how it has impacted my daily workflow as a software engineer. My goal is to share the pros, cons, and practical insights for anyone considering an ergonomic keyboard for improved comfort and efficiency.

Sent out a big ol’ update on my activities for this year

With word on my book sales (about 1,500 sold 🪗📚) new buttons with Sharron Shannon, lots of pictures and reviews, and my fancy

Book review: Bruce gives personalized service, addresses you by name and lots of little extras along with my book (I bought 2, a second copy for my family). Just started his book and it's off to a smooth start. I'll be purchasing from him again! Highly recommend! I made another split ergonomic keyboard. This one is kipra v2 with some nice improvements over its predecessor.

Blog post with details is up and includes a thrilling 2-hour build video!

2 halves of a split keyboard arranged side by side. Has sculpted keycaps on the top and bottom row. In the background is a 3D printed travel case half printed in black PLA and half in white PLA

New #ergonomickeyboard and #ergonomicmouse since the old set was starting to get a bit touchy. Decided to try out a new set. Lenovo something or other. It has cork!

So far so good. Hoping it lasts a long while. Mice tend to give up on me fast.

An ergonomic keyboard and mouse on a giant mousepad desk. The desk is kind of a mess too.

Anyone here using a split ergo #keyboard?
Was thinking of building one, but confused between corneV2 and Lily58 pro. How has your experience been with those boards?

Considering replacing my current mechanical keyboard (Razer Blackwidow Lite) with an ergonomic keyboard, but can't make the choice:
- X-Boxs knight
- Ergodox Moonlander
- Ergodox Voyager

Advice would be welcome!

Code to the Moon on Ergonomic Keyboards

Okay his top pick at the end is one I want to try out now. Unfortunately like most ergo boards of this nature it's over $500 Canadian so I'll need to budget for it.

Excellent Ergonomic Keyboard Primer
youtube.com/watch?v=q8FeBPREzZA

This is an excellent ergonomic keyboard primer from Dygma. I currently have a Moonlander, which I just realized I have never reviewed. I have no complaints about it, and don't really need to switch but I have always looked at the offerings from Dygma and won
