60 years ago “artificial reefs” were made by chaining together car and truck tyres and dumping them in the ocean offshore from popular beaches to slow erosion of sand by tides and weather events. La erosión costera silenciosa: El impacto de las desaladoras en la desaparición de playas. El caso de Balerma y la desaladora de Balanegra

Resumen
El presente artículo examina la problemática, a menudo silenciada, de la erosión costera exacerbada por la operación de plantas desalinizadoras, tomando como caso de estudio la playa de Balerma (Almería, España) y su presunta vinculación con la desaladora de Balanegra. Si bien las desaladoras son presentadas como soluciones beneficiosas para el suministro de agua potable y de riego en regiones áridas, su funcionamiento puede acarrear consecuencias ambientales significativas, particularmente en la dinámica sedimentaria litoral. Este trabajo explora los mecanismos por los cuales las desaladoras contribuyen a la erosión costera y cuestiona la eficacia de soluciones paliativas como la construcción de espigones, sugiriendo que podrían incluso agravar el problema a largo plazo. Se subraya la necesidad de una evaluación integral de los impactos ambientales de las desaladoras, que trascienda su utilidad hídrica, y se aboga por la transparencia y el debate público en torno a estas infraestructuras.

Introducción
La escasez hídrica es un desafío creciente a nivel global, especialmente en regiones semiáridas y áridas. En este contexto, la desalinización del agua de mar se presenta como una alternativa viable para garantizar el suministro de agua potable y para la agricultura. Sin embargo, la construcción y operación de plantas desalinizadoras no están exentas de impactos ambientales, algunos de los cuales pueden ser significativos y a menudo subestimados. Uno de estos impactos, que ha recibido relativamente poca atención en el debate público, es su potencial contribución a la erosión costera y la consecuente pérdida de playas.
