#Austria #cool #ride Had some cool ride out to a lake here. ~40 km having #organicsmaps running on #Pixel8a #GrapheneOS #Espeak .

The Pixel has now enought power, compared to the #fairphone fp3+ an everything works great. selected route is cool too.

There was some pay / abo stuff shown on Organicsmap. Need to checkout what they are for. Was not aware of subscriptions for it.

**update**: If you are using this post as some kind of call-to-action to harass and attack the GOS developers, please don't.

That damages everyone. You, them, and myself. It's not helpful.

**Update two**. I have made the decision to pull this post. It is not a good starting-point for a discussion, and just encourages defensiveness on both sides – when there really aren't sides here at all.

As a FOSS contributor, I am deeply ashamed at the way I approached this out of frustration.

So, I finally hit the jackpot! Using the Tech Freedom TTS engine, set to use the eSpeak TTS engine, I have absolutely no lag where the TTS engine is concerned. Of course, TalkBack can still lag when swiping or scrolled, but I'm surprisingly getting used to that. So the issue I have with using Espeak by itself is that sometimes it'll switch dialects from US to UK English, and that is rather jarring to me. Also, I tried this other TTS engine on FDroid, which uses Piper voices, and it's far more responsive than the other one. That TTS engine is called SherpaTTS

I hate it when I use Organic Maps with voice assistance, but suddenly instead of reading the direction, the TTS spells them!

This is my first bit of actual character art; a robot named "Prescott Norwood" who I play over on the Kaerwyn Creative Writing Group Roleplay.

@kuketzblog, danke für kuketz-blog.de/android-spracha

@daygar How does #ESpeak still read Unicode characters as hex codes when #nvdasr has the entire CLDR in it?

@technolass@tweesecake.social Ya might not have issues using voices from Cereproc via the #CerePlay application:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cereproc.cerevoicesapp
, where those only cost a dollar each and also have a "free" audio demo to play around with before purchase. You also get 2 voices for free, those being Heather and Sam (free download).

Yes, Google decided to kill 32-bit apps starting with the Pixel 7, thus it's all 64-bit for the future. And that's not even an Android 14 thing, that's google themselves.
(One of the peeps around here will correct me I'm sure, if I missed something)...

I don't know why Google TTS voices sound better if using an entirely different Android screen reader, such as
#Prudence (free in the Play Store):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.prudence.reader
a "more responsive" version of Talkback, but there ya go.

Other free voices include
#RHVoice (in the Playstore):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.github.olga_yakovleva.rhvoice.android
, and
#ESPeak (, though it's best to get it streight from GitHub):
https://github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng
, and pick the voice/varient ya wish to use. The version found there, is based off of ESpeak found in NVDA.

There "are" Acapela and Vocalizer TTS of course, but well.. they sadly are the most expensive out there, ranging from $4 to $11.99 each (especially for Acapela 'child' voices).

@rune Basically all the #FreeSoftware ones (basically all frontends of #ESpeak (espeak.sourceforge.net/) and #Festival).

The main problem is that most of them have rather... lacking voices.

Privacy-wise though? It'll all be running local-only.

github.com/espeak-ng/espeak-ng seems to be actively maintained.

I'd like to use a voice generation tool that isn't deemed harmful or stealing someone else's voice. Is there any sort of "ethical" or community Creative Commons-esque backed model and/or program I can use to turn text into speech, on Linux? Mozilla Voice stuff maybe?
e or gspeak just does not cut it unfortunately with the default voices... Maybe there are better models for that program?

If you have to do Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech tasks and don't want to send your data to the Internet, I recommend you to try Speech Note (Linux desktop app).
