@JdeBP That laptop has some problems. I was able to get FreeBSD installed after changing it from #BIOS to #UEFI (with hybrid CSM). I spent some time with it today on my lunch break and changed it to UEFI with native CSM. There was no change. But, what I did find is I am unable to update the BIOS (even after the recent recommended downgrade from HP) because....the NIC isn't recognized. That is new. So now the laptop is currently stuck on a firmware from 2018 with apparently no #Ethernet. Stupendous!

I set it aside and dug out another spare laptop. This time my mother's old #Toshiba #Satellite that was running #Windows7. It's a Core i7 with 8GB with an ancient 5,400 RPM disk. Should be fine. Well, I ran into problems after choosing the auto #ZFS option. After that, the installer could not proceed. Even after rebooting the laptop and restarting the installer I was unable to do anything to the disk, including delete slices or choose auto UFS. I have never experienced this before with FreeBSD and I am comically puzzled.

I did have a spare FreeBSD 14.1 DVD laying around and so far the installer is working just fine, even if it is moving slower than molasses down a freezer wall.

@ulrichkelber @adorfer alle "#SharedMedium" - Umsetzungen sind #Krückentechnologie.

Egal ob #5G, #PON oder #DOCSIS: Keins davon kann echte #Glasfaser in Form von #OS2-Faserpaaren und #Ethernet ersetzen, und deshalb werden auch diese konsequent im #B2B-Bereich verlegt!

Cuz I'm looking for something like an #Ethernet-#Modem because #WiFi - espechally 802.11g as supported by #ESP3266 - sucks and 10/100Base-T with #PoE as option is a way better alternative.

So it's not impossible to facilitate something like that.

Just a 10/100BASE-T adaptor connected via RS-232...

@gafu @makake Genau dieser Unterschied ist absurd, gerade weil das Nutzerverhalten weniger asymetrisch denn je ist und immer symmetrischer wird.

Leute machen heute #Videocalling, #Dateisynchronisation, #Backups, #SelfHosting und #Streamen auch selbst.

Sollte ich jemals ne #Immobilie besitzen werd' ich mir #Ethernet auf OS2-Faser legen - gern auch redundant mit seperaten Hauseinführungen...

@gafu @makake Ja ich kenne ((X)G))PON und es gibt nen Grund warum sowas nur an #TechIlliterates und #Consumer verkauft wird, aber #Gewerbekunden stattdessen #Ethernet-Faserpaare bekommen:

Weil's (lapidar ausgebrückt) nix anderes ist als "#DOCSIS auf #Faser!" und damit ein #SharedMedium mit allen Nachteilen!

Ich betrachte PON daher als Fehlinvestition zumal ab #OLT eh auf #Ethernet umgelegt wird, und es mit #CWDM, #DWDM und generell #Ethernet-Switching genug Optionen gibt um Bandbreite zu verteilen.

Außerdem gibt's mit direkten Faserpaaren weniger Probleme wenn Leute mit ihren CPEs (aka. ONT) Mist baun, und ja das tun die - genauso wie mit #Koaxkabel!

Asymetrische Anschlüsse sind IMHO beschissen und bremsen #Digitalisierung nur aus!
