Cargo. Journal for Cultural and Social Anthropology

We are seeking contributions to a special issue of Cargo. Journal for Cultural and Social Anthropology focused on contemporary ethnographic research of learning and teaching across different cultural contexts. Situated at the intersection of education and anthropology, this special issue invites authors to examine the social discourses that shape contemporary educational practices, theories and policies. We welcome a wide range of submissions from both anthropologists and educational researchers engaging with diverse educational contexts (both formal and informal). Articles must be written in the English language and can range from full-length empirical research studies and theoretical contributions (5,000 - 8,000 words) to shorter papers featuring reflections or interviews (2,000 - 4,000 words).

Cargo. Journal for Cultural and Social Anthropology (ISSN online 2450-3452) is a peer-reviewed full open-access journal published by the University of Pardubice, the University of Hradec Kralové and the Czech Association for Social Anthropology (CASA). The Journal focuses on the theory-and-practice of ethnographic research and critical discussion of anthropological theory and knowledge. The journal publishes academic articles, interviews with anthropologists, and texts debating methods of teaching anthropology, short research reports and book reviews.

If you are interested in contributing to the thematic issue, please send us a provisional title and a short abstract of maximum 100 words of your intended contribution by January 15, 2026. Full texts will be due on May 30, 2026 and they will undergo a peer-review process. The thematic issue will be published as the last issue of 2026 or the first issue of 2027.

Yuri credited his cat, Asya, with helping him crack the Mayan code (he noticed her teaching kittens to hunt, and got the idea that glyphs weren't letters but syllables). He listed her on his academic papers and was livid when publishers took her name off. When publishers asked for a photograph, he'd send this one so that the cat was front and center. He did not like it when they cropped her out, either.

Fittingly, his efforts were well received by the Mexican government and he received one of their highest honors and a statue in the Yucatan (home of the Mayan Civiliation)- a statue which depicts him holding his cat.
