#EuropePMC

2025-05-06

Arbeitet man zusammen? Oder heisst digitale Souveränität hier dann leider "Lasst uns das nächste Silo bauen!"

Vielleicht weiß @kuf auch was dazu?

PubMed & Trump policy Pt. II

Some compared search results for gender-related topics in PubMed with EuropePMC. You can't really compare these databases.

EuropePMC contains preprints, conference papers and comments, so more non-peer reviewed publications.

PubMed & Trump policy

There are rumors that it is better to stop using PubMed. The Medical Library does not endorse this. Despite concerns about censorship, there are no concrete indications yet that search terms such as ‘gender’ and ‘transgender’ have been censored.

PubMed is still the preferred database for searching biomedical research publications. A good alternative is Embase.

@fresseng

You should get in touch with @kfitz
They even have their own :mastodon: instance and are interacting with #bonfire folks.

OK, my list is now

#Zenodo (in use, but I didn't see its potential 🏆)
#OpenAlex (in me use 🦸)
#kcworks (ready to discover this week 🕵️)
#Bonfire (waiting for it 👀)
#europepmc (will use it more 🦾)
#ORCiD (my appologies, I undervalued you🧎)

Now, if #Pubmed is taken offline entirely, that would suck, we would probably all head over to #EuropePMC (we should) and EuropePMC would have to make a few adaptations, mirroring is not going to be enough anymore, they'll have to take the lead.

@Josteglitz @SafeguardingResearch @lavaeolus @kakape
I do. 🙂 But I have never thought much about it.

I understand that lots of the #EuropePMC content is from #PubMed. Will they have the capacity to do it completely on their own, if #PubMed is shut down?

Does anyone know of a search engine which searches all #preprint archives, and only preprint archives (i.e., not Google Scholar)? In #EuropePMC I find @biorxivpreprint and @ecoevorxiv, but not @arxiv_bio.

We urge stakeholders in the research system to work with innovation-friendly bibliographic databases. Examples of databases that are more supportive of innovation include #Dimensions, @OpenAlex and #EuropePMC, among others.

How we built a database of preprints blog.europepmc.org/2024/11/how

While #WebOfScience is 'delisting' innovative platforms such as @eLife, #EuropePMC is moving in the opposite direction and is working hard to give maximal visibility to preprints and preprint reviews. Exemplary work!

Thanks, @bleistifterin. A quick skim didn't make me think this is ready to go for the average person.

Somewhere else in the replies to my post was a suggestion to just use #EuropePMC which can send alerts for ORCIDs (and other identifiers).

Wow, I love this feature. Thanks for sharing, @kdnyhan

I can even tell #EuropePMC which day to send the alert (to protect #workLifeBalance by getting work emails on the weekend — looking at you #googlescholar).

And there's an option to have the abstract included in the email alert, saving me unnecessary trips to the online paper to see if the methods are appropriate for the kinds of questions that interest me!

So cool! 👏

Impressive to see all the efforts #EuropePMC is making to offer high-quality indexing of preprints. This is so important! doi.org/10.1101/2024.04.19.590

Still a lot of work to do to further strengthen the preprint infrastructure ecosystem, e.g. to improve metadata availability: "there is a lot of variability in scope of metadata deposited by preprint servers to @crossref"

See also my 2023 blog post with @neesjanvaneck about preprint indexing in different databases doi.org/10.54900/fk7p22x-xydne.

Last year @neesjanvaneck and I made recommendations for improving the indexing of preprints in bibliographic databases upstream.force11.org/the-prepr.

Great to see that #EuropePMC is making important progress in realizing one of the recommendations ("Recommendation 4: Provide links between preprints and peer reviews") blog.europepmc.org/2024/01/dis!

2023-10-17

This morning I gave a brief talk about preprint peer review at the #PreprintReview23 workshop organized by #EuropePMC and @ASAPbio.

I made the observation that everyone seems unhappy and frustrated in the traditional peer review system. Change in peer review is long overdue!

Update. #SCOPUS and #WOS are also very incomplete at indexing #preprints. See this new study comparing them to #Dimensions, #Lens, and #EuropePMC.

3. EuropePMC handles hyphenated search terms differently from how I expected.
I expected line 9 would process like lines 8 or 7, but actually line 9 is the same and lines 10 or 11. Lesson: put your hyphenated search terms into quotes when you search #EuropePMC #medlibs

The preprint revolution - Implications for bibliographic databases upstream.force11.org/the-prepr

Bibliographic databases are increasingly recognizing importance of preprints. How do they index preprints?

@neesjanvaneck and I offer 6 recommendations for preprint indexing. We show to what extent #Dimensions, #EuropePMC, #Lens, #Scopus and #WebOfScience meet these recommendations.

Improving preprint indexing requires joint action by many players in scholarly publishing infrastructure ecosystem!

@Luke_Drury @cwts @neesjanvaneck Thanks Luke, I must admit I'm not familiar with the ADS system, but this sounds great.

There are also various multidisciplinary databases that have been indexing preprints already for some time, including #Dimensions, #Lens and #EuropePMC. We'll discuss this in the blog post that we're working on.
