Mailo 🇫🇷 is a French e-mail provider that has a version of its e-mail service specially designed for children. It is called Mailo Junior and it's a safe and educational email service for children aged 6-14. 🧒 👧

Parents are able to monitor their children's address books and children will only be able to exchange emails with their parent-approved correspondents.

No advertising, no tracking, no profiling - just like an email service should be for everyone!

Mailo Junior offers two different interfaces. The Mini is perfect for kids aged 6 to 9, with basic features. And for those aged 10 to 14, the Junior interface is the way to go, with more features such as a calendar and virtual disc.

Later, the child's account can be upgraded to the standard Mailo, so they can keep their own address.

And most importantly: kids can email Santa directly from Mailo! 🎅 How does it work? Parents receive their child's message to Santa Claus and then instruct Santa's helpers to create a personalised message just for their child. 🎄 (well, sadly this feature is currently only available in French 🇫🇷) (Conditions: perenoel.mailo.com/mailo/fr/bu)

The data is stored in France, at Ecritel (ecritel.fr).

LAUNCHING A VISION FOR DIGITAL AUTONOMY

Still new to the Fediverse — finding my way. But I’m committed. And thinking big.

I’ve been exploring digital autonomy from all angles. What began as a personal reflection became a proposal: the European Digital Autonomy Initiative (EDAI).

I’d love your thoughts — and boosts! Maybe this can help bring together some great independent efforts.

Strategic synergy of the three EDAI pillars. Each reinforces the others, accelerating Europe’s journey toward digital autonomy — all rooted in shared European values.

@DrALJONES Thank you! I boosted it for anyone interested.
I live in France and we try to #resist #Trump & Co with European methods: #boykott + #TeslaTakeDown. Also with searching for #EuropeanAlternatives against the #techBros. @european_alternatives has some ideas for that.

Often it seems to be difficult at the first glance, if you depend professionally. Just one example: Substack helps people to get a huge auditory while independent structures are smaller. But I just saw a world renowned

INTRODUCING: THE NEW FAIRPHONE...

Europe stands at a crossroads. Do we continue relying on digital services that don’t reflect our values — or do we begin building something better?

The European Digital Autonomy Initiative (EDAI) is a vision I’ve been developing — a proposal to reimagine digital sovereignty rooted in European values like privacy, transparency, and inclusion.

It’s not anti-American. It’s pro-European. Let’s invent a digital Europe that belongs to us.

We need awareness, smart regulation, and real alternatives. This isn’t just about technology — it’s about identity, trust, and the future we want to share. Beyond left and right.

Where's the #europeanalternatives for this? It's all I'm caring for in a car (no pun).

On board multimedia? I don't care, I have a mobile.
Navigation? Same
Cruise control? Okay, would be nice, but if push comes to shove I can do without.
More electronics means more complexity means more expensive and more failures.

PixelUnion is a brilliant Google Photos alternative: a hosted Immich solution based in Europe. Love the name.

But there's no Google Photos import tool (seriously?) and I emailed them asking to please provide such an option. I also recommended that they join Mastodon and add an RSS feed to their blog (seriously?).

I guess it is not what you have asked for, but your requirements sound like your friends need a wordpress site with calendar, photogallery, events.

By luck it has activity pub plugins to connect to the fediverse.

Basic just to go. With time and interest enabling plugin by plugin.

That is what hundreds of customers really wanted. With a simple WYSIWYG editor to publish, and every post editable or deletable.

#AskFedi #EuropeanAlternatives

For some time now, I’ve been gradually replacing U.S.-dominated digital services with European-developed alternatives — both on my PC and my phone. This isn’t a one-time switch, but an ongoing experiment in digital autonomy, privacy, and balance.

The screenshot shows one screen of my phone, featuring European apps and platforms that I actively use or am currently testing. These include alternatives to browsers, email, messaging, navigation, video, search, and more.

This journey was inspired in part by the European Alternatives directory — a fantastic, regularly updated list of digital tools created and hosted in Europe. The project was started by Constantin Graf, an Austrian developer who maintains the initiative.

Here’s a selection of European apps I’m actively using or currently testing — some of which appear in the screenshot:

  • Vivaldi: A privacy-focused Norwegian browser
  • Mastodon: Federated microblogging platform. I’m also testing Rodent, a Mastodon client that feels more complete in terms of UX/UI.
  • Pixelfed: Federated image-sharing platform, focused on privacy and decentralization.
  • Qwant: A French search engine
  • Threema: Swiss secure messenger
  • Proton Mail: Swiss encrypted email
  • PeerTube: Decentralized video platform
  • pCloud: European cloud storage
  • Mullvad VPN: Swedish privacy-first VPN
  • Spotify: Swedish-based streaming service — although some question its alignment with European digital sovereignty
  • HERE WeGo: Navigation app developed in Germany. I’m also testing Lokjo, a promising open-source alternative using OpenStreetMap.
  • Le Chat: Chatbot interface for Mistral AI’s French language models
  • European Alternatives: Mobile version of the directory itself

This isn’t about cutting all ties with US services overnight. It’s about creating space — to support platforms that reflect European values like transparency, sustainability, and decentralization.

If you’re curious to explore alternatives, the European Alternatives directory is a great place to start.

We need some suggestions!

A friend has a non-profit association and they use Google Sites as their website where they publish their calendar, events, photos, etc.

We would like to suggest a European alternative to Google Sites, but it has to be:

- free
- no-code
- easy (for a 70 year old non-tech-savvy admin)
- not just one landing page: there are many categories of information, one page for each)
- no need for fancy design, their current Google Site is text heavy

We only know paid solutions, self-hosting or free one-page website, so it doesn't help.

If there isn't a European solution, a non-Google option might be okay.

Any recommendations?
