A Starling makes a stunning rainbow from its blazing yellow beak through black, purple, green and blue feathers to a star-specked tail.
European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) standing on vibrant green grass. The bird’s plumage is glossy black with iridescent purple and green hues and scattered pale speckles. Its sharp yellow bill and upright posture are clearly visible. It has a bit of spider's web stuck between its bill and the top of its head.

🌍🌏 Common starling (Sturnus vulgaris)

The common starling is a medium-sized bird, appearing black with a glossy green and purple iridescence up close. In winter, they are covered in bright white spots. Juveniles are grey-brown.

They are widely distributed across Eurasia, and introduced in North America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, thriving in urban, suburban, and agricultural areas.

Common starlings are highly gregarious and noisy. They forage on the ground for insects and fruit. Famous for their aerial "murmurations"—large, coordinated flocks performing intricate displays at dusk—they are also known for mimicking other bird calls and squabbling at feeders. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Around twelve subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

If you're ever out in nature and you hear a Killdeer, but you can't find it anywhere, or maybe you hear something that sounds like a robot beeping or running water when you're nowhere near a stream, odds are there is a tree full of European Starlings right next to you, all deeply amused by your confusion.

Managed to spot a small hole with a small little face just before the adult European Starling came in to deliver food.

Starling on the Wire

Like most people, I love it when someone shares one of my images or posts—whether by reboosting or embedding it. But yesterday, I came across one of my images on BlueSky, posted by someone who claimed it as their own. Curious, I visited their profile and noticed several other images that I recognized from creators I follow on BlueSky.

I asked the person why they had done this, and their response was simple: they liked the image. Honestly, I’m torn between feeling flattered and frustrated—maybe it’s possible to feel both at once.

Anyway, this is an image of a European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) that I spotted yesterday while adventuring with Charlie. Starlings are an invasive species in North America, introduced in the 19th century. Now, their population has exploded to an estimated 200 million—so that cat is well and truly out of the bag.

"The image features a European Starling, perched confidently on a thick strand of twisted cable, possibly a powerline. Its glossy feathers shimmer with an iridescent mix of purples, blues, and greens, creating a mesmerizing display against the industrial backdrop. Tiny white speckles adorn its dark plumage, giving it a jewel-like appearance. The bird’s sharp, pointed beak and watchful eyes hint at its keen awareness, scanning the surroundings with quiet intensity.

The cable beneath its feet is sturdy, its tightly wound strands adding texture to the composition. There’s a contrast between the organic beauty of the starling and the man-made structure it rests upon—a blend of nature adapting to the modern world. The background remains softly blurred, a mixture of muted greens and browns, suggesting trees or distant urban scenery. The starling seems poised—perhaps ready to take flight or simply surveying its domain from its lofty perch." - Copilot

A little under a year ago I bought a used #NikonZ7ii. And it’s mostly been a pain in the butt. #Mirrorless photography isn’t fun. Again dealing with soft images. Assumed lens problem so I put it on my old beloved D7200.

Nope. Lens is OK. So it’s the body or maybe my rough handling has messed up the FTZ adapter. Anyway, here’s a dumb invasive (but still pretty!) European Starling from my old trusty d7200. (Straight off camera and cropped. I don’t do much editing)
