Scientists Sounding Alarm As World’s Largest #Tropical #Lake Turns Green
In #LakeVictoria, #eutrophication and resulting #HAB have been caused by over a century of human activity sending nutrients into lake’s water. #Agricultural #runoff, #sewage, and industrial #wastewater have all been linked to the problem, as well as products of slash and burn practices, biomass burning, and industry being sent up into the atmosphere and dumped down into lake.

Lifeless rock pools at Sawtell

After cyclone Alfred whipped up a 'bacteria smoothy' along Australia's east coast the sea foam then merged with a 'flush' from the suburbs. Dislodged smelly sponges at Sawtell beach made breathing and contact impossible. Even without fossil fueled disasters the intertidal zone at the north end of the beach is barren. The rock pools and crevices no longer house sea anemones, crabs, black nerites, limpets, sea stars, mulberry oyster borers, algae, sea anemones, sponges, tube worms, sea stars, oysters, and fish.

Still good enough for hosting 'sports' and advertising events amplified by megaphone so they can be heard at Lord Howe Island too.

Species invasions will succeed especially in warm, nutrient-rich environments. The ongoing environmental changes that make such environments more common will therefore facilitate invasions of animal species into new areas. The model also predicted more frequent invasions of smaller species in all trophic positions.

Early 2024, my 2nd PhD Chapter was published about the key roles of species body sizes and trophic positions in determining the outcomes of #invasivespecies in communities subject to gradients of #temperature and nutrients levels. A pretty cool study with N. Pichon, A. Sentis and D. Boukal.
