When I looked on maps, I was able to see that the area above the giraffe garden was part of the Hotel de la chèvre d’or — a fancy hotel in the old town. I search their website but could not see any mention of this garden — but they did have one picture that showed a tiny segment of it. And on another page there was a picture — faded out, behind text — of a child near the haunch of a statuary animal. Bingo. Mystery solved.

I know, not an exciting ending. But the mystery of it entertained me for much of yesterday.

I immediately pulled out my phone to search for this. It wasn’t mentioned in any of the on-line guides to the town, or sights to see. The internet didn’t seem to know about this garden, or who owned it. It was a mystery!

It wasn’t until I got home later that I was able to solve it.

This made no sense, but luckily I was carrying my good camera, which had a 300mm telephoto on it. So with some more dangerous leaning (and my husband telling me to get the hell down before I kill myself) I was able to snap a picture of this mysterious garden.

Built on terraces below the level of the town, and invisible to it, the garden features Greek-style statuary urns, along with life-sized statues of two giraffes, a lion, a horse, and possibly other animals. It was quite beautiful.

After exploring the beautiful old town, we started to walk down the trail that connects Eze to Eze-sur-mer down at sea level. It’s a rough rocky path down the side of the mountain that takes about an hour to walk.

We didn’t go far — just a short distance to a lookout point with a good view.

After taking a couple of pictures of the view, something caught my eye when I turned around. I was looking back at the mountain through thick tree cover and couldn’t make it out. But I am exceptionally tall, and by climbing up onto a rail (with my husband gripping my belt), I was able to lean far enough to find an opening in the tree cover, and saw it clearly.

It was a giraffe, on a ledge on the side of the mountain, below the level of the medieval town.

The Mysterious Mountain Giraffes of Eze

Yesterday I took a bus up a winding mountain road to visit the medieval village of Eze (rhymes with “fez”) which is located just east of Nice. The bus drops you in the modern town, and from there you walk up a steep hill into the old town, which is perched on the top of a stone promontory, with cliffs overlooking the ocean.

The old town is full of narrow, winding streets on multiple levels, now filled with restaurants, clothing, and souvenir shops. The views from the high points are spectacular.
