All hail and tremble:
... In the Final Fantasy 8 video game, characters can cast magic on enemies or allies. Characters can draw magic from the ground or other characters, as if they were stocking inventory items.

Characters can also equip ("junction" -- whatever tf that means) stocked magic to different stats, like strength, luck, or health points.

Finally, characters can exchange:
stock magic for items, items for magic, enemies for cards, cards for items or magic. Some items can trigger a battle, exchanging items to encounter enemies.

(Or you buy or sell items for currency, called Gil. Sometimes you buy access to draw magic from the ground.)

IRL, your credit (score or rating or number or wtf everrrr) is the social value or shaming to guess future performance, maybe. It could resemble ...
each character's compatibility (attack speed) with each magic GF who lives in their head.

So! Cast magic to spend it for lower enemy HP. Draw magic to add it to stock. (Junction (equip) stock magic for a stat rise.) Exchange magic for items, or GF compatibilities.

Finally, things that are in the "let's see" box:

* Much has been said of Squall as a flat and unemotional protagonist. So far, he comes across to me quite compellingly as a troubled young man who is bad at being emotionally vulnerable. But if that doesn't develop as the game goes on then it will become one note.
* The whole child soldiers thing! Hopefully this gets interrogated later on.

No spoilers please!

Less good:

* Outside of combat the controls are a bit clumsy and finding interaction points is fiddly. FFIX recognised this latter issue with exploring pre-rendered scenes with prompts for interaction and I'm feeling the lack here.
* Not keen on the sexist double standards for Garden's female students - given that they are actively performing as mercenaries in a warzone there's no excuse for them all to be in miniskirts.

Things I like so far:

* Very different start from most RPGs - enrolled in academy, but straight away thrust into a warzone. No sleepy villages here.
* The characters have distinct and fluid animations that set them apart and reveal their personality.
* Feeling like I have plenty to think about with the combat/draw/junction/learn systems, so the combat isn't just rote
* The snappy and stylish transition to battle
* And of course, Uematsu's soundtrack is just perfect

I have begun playing FFVIII! I really don't know whether I've played it before. Certainly when it was first out, we didn't own it, because I clearly remember childish rivalry between me and my friend as to whether my game (7) or his (8) was best. But I feel like maybe I played a bit of it later on an emulator?

Anyway, impressions after the first couple of hours are really positive! More thoughts to come... 🧵

I recently played and completed FF9 on the Switch, which is the first Final Fantasy game I've played since the PS2 era, and the first one I've completed since 7.

I'm trying to decide which one to replay next: 7, 8 or 10. Partly I want to start with 8 because I know it least, and then 10 & 7. But I'm also worried that I"ll lose momentum for the project if I don't enjoy 8 as much, and that I should instead play one I'm confident I'll enjoy.

Playing *Fisherman's Horizon* from Final Fantasy VIII on the piano atm, and looking into the context of Fisherman's Horizon is SO COOL.

It's like a town built on top of an old railway station out of recycled materials and powered by wind turbines and solar panels - all cool and solarpunk like! The railway station is on a bridge that spans 2 continents, it's a peaceful place.

It makes me want to play FFVIII now...!

Getting very close to the end of #FFXIII, and only now really getting into upgrading weapons. That is where the damage deficiency is. Really 11th hour for me to be learning this.

I also learned about the Lionheart gunblade, which you can only get in the last chapter. And I want it so bad. The Squall fan in me is screaming.
