#FLX1

The main camera still impresses me.

Looking forward to receiving my @furilabs soon. Have been using the as my daily driver for a year now.

@mukto_manob @rysiek As someone whose daily driving #postmarketOS (stable phosh) on a #Librem5, I think that mobile Linux is sufficiently advanced for non-developers to use, especially if they are already used to #DesktopLinux.

#FuriLabs devices even come with Android app support enabled out of the box and have higher specs, so I'd expect them to be more normie-friendly.

#FLX1 #FLX1s #LibertyPhone #MobileLinux #LinuxMobile

@privacyguides I think #LinuxMobile is the only real path forward for freedom.

Instead of hoping in #Google, it would be better in the long run if concerned users rallied behind #Linux options (mainline or #Halium-based), and there are quite a few now, existing and upcoming.

Today I transed a phone (I bought a Gigaset GX6 from Amazon Germany at the beginning of September because I didn't think the FLX1 would ever ship and I installed FuriOS on it today after it arrived; sound doesn't work on it anymore even though the last time I checked the guide I used, it didn't say anything about sound not being supported, and camera doesn't work, either, maybe because of no sound). This is the first time I've unlocked an Android phone.

@justsoup

Honestly, it's not sexy, but I really just want something cheap, reliable and able to cover my basics, which is nothing more demanding than some streaming video. I was on a Pixel2XL with #LineageOS/#GrapheneOS before. It was more than enough for me, but I'd like something equivalent with Mainline Linux. Really my only extravagance is that I want a decent camera (eg #FLX1) eg 13mp+ w OIS and autofocus.

I keep thinking how I'd love #PmOS to pick a decent midrange phone and just slam on that until just one single model has good all 'round support. I'd happily put money towards a crowdfunder for that if it would help.

I ended up doing the opt-in to get the FLX1s.

I did the opt-in mainly because I want to support what FuriLabs is doing.

I do want a (non-Android) Linux phone. And, I do care about privacy a lot. I have wanted a phone like this for a while.

And, they are trying to build one that might be good-enough for me to ditch Android

...

I do hope that they also create a model with a better screen, better camera, and a headphone jack later. I'd buy it, too

FLX1S is a new Linux phone that’s… mostly a downgrade from the FLX1

The Furi Labs FLX1S is a new smartphone with a a 6.7 inch FHD+ display featuring a 90 Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a MediaTek Dimensity 900 processor (which was released in 2021). The phone is up for pre-order for $550 and it’s expected to ship in October.

While that price might seem a little steep for a phone with those specs, there are a few things that make the FLX1S […]

I like that the (new) FLX1s has more RAM than the FLX1.

But the FLX1 has a better screen.

I like the hardware kill switches for the Mic, Camera, & Modem of the FLX1s.

But the FLX1 has a regular headphone jack while the FLX1s doesn't.

I like the lighter weight of the FLX1s.

But the FLX1 has a removable battery while the FLX1s doesn't.

The FLX1 also has IP68 water-proofing while the FLX1s doesn't. (I have had phones submerged in water before.)

I pre-ordered the FuriLabs FLX1 Linux phone back in February.

Furilabs is giving me an option to switch to another model of their phones.

RE: mastodon.social/@reiver/114807

Dear Charles,

Details for the sister device are now finalised. It will have 2G more RAM and a sleeker, more modern look over the FLX1. We have devices in production now.

The FLX1s is lighter, slimmer, packs more RAM and has 3 kill switches.

  	FLX1 FLX1 SLIM
RAM 6GB 8GB
Camera Front 16MP, Back 50MB, Macro 2MP Front 13MP, Back 20MP, Macro 2PM (the camera module of the FLX1s does more processing in software leading to a higher quality image at the end)
Resolution FHD @ 120hz 1600x720 @90hz
Dimensions 171mm x 82mm x 12mm 170mm x 76mm x 8mm
Weight 280g 201g
Waterproof IP68 Life (splashes not submerged)
Removable Battery Yes No
Headphone Jack Yes No
Hardware Switches 0 3 (Mic, Camera, Modem)

The rest remains the same across the board. Visit our updated FuriLabs.com website for more info and specifications of the device.

Please reply "YES" to opt-in.

After we begin shipping the FLX1s we will be releasing our new HDMI out hub. It will enable full desktop FuriOS out into a monitor. We will be releasing this hub after the shipment of the FLX1s has begun.

@panda Actually there a few decent-spec 'normie'-friendly options like #Furiphone #FLX1 and #JollaC2 - both have Android app compatibility set up out of the box.

@daniel See #Furiphone #FLX1 from @furilabs Better specs and more 'normie' friendly compared to Librem 5 and Pinephone. Flathub and Android app compatibility set up out of the box.

@Tutanota Linux mobile is the only long term solution. I'm using #postmarketOS on a #Librem5 and all important things work for me.

#Furiphone #FLX1 and #JollaC2 can also be decent options for most people as they have Android app compatibility set up out of the box.

@joseph @okias Best Linux-ey option right now would be a #Furiphone #FLX1 from @furilabs. Otherwise, if you're hardcore FOSS enthusiast passionate about doing everything the 'right way', the #LibertyPhone from @purism can work for daily use - provided you carry a power bank with you.

if we were to flash #furios onto a gigaset gx6 *pro* (which has usb 3.0 and 8gb ram), could we use a secondary display connected via usb-c?

@DrewNaylor with some phones true. Some sailfishos and ubuntu touch devices are in par with pc/laptop level. And if you like more standard linux desktop style you should pick #flx1 from @furilabs. With those options "I can use computer" -level is enough

@jonah Great to see that you touched on the #LinuxMobile option. I'm daily driving #postmarketOS on my #Librem5 and it's good enough to do most of what I need - the only thing does not work is recording sound in videos. Even running #FOSS Android apps using #Fdroid, #Obtainium, etc. on #Waydroid works, although the #LibertyPhone with more RAM and storage is better suited for it.

There's also the #FLX1 (runs #Droidian-based #FuriOS) which comes at a more affordable price, and Android app compatibility set up out of the box. I think that is more 'normie'-friendly and has decent specs overall compared to true Linux phones. Camera quality is as good as Android as it uses Android kernel and drivers.

I've heard that modern Linux Mobile is about where Linux on the desktop was 20 years ago. In 2004, Ubuntu was released, and was called a distro that pretty much just works as long as you know enough of what you're doing. In 2024, the Furilabs FLX1 with FuriOS launched, which I've heard a lot about being a Linux phone that pretty much just works as you would expect a phone to work. Not to dismiss early efforts like MeeGo and Maemo.
