I thought I’d stick with the agreeable theme of big Citroëns again today. The XM was the predecessor of yesterday’s C6, although there was a five year hiatus between the XM bowing out in 2000 and the launch of the C6 in 2005. The XM, which was related to the Peugeot 605, sold in much larger numbers than the C6 was later able to achieve. Snapped at the Festival of the Unexceptional in 2024.

Today, we’re sticking with the double chevron badge but this big Citroën C6 doesn’t have much else in common with the 2CVs I posted yesterday and the day before. One of my favourite cars of all time. Rather under-rated. Produced between 2005 and 2012. I saw this Dutch registered example at this year’s Festival of the Unexceptional.

A gratuitous click-bait crowd-pleaser today. I saw this early-seventies Citroën 2CV Fourgonette van at this year’s Festival of the Unexceptional in Lincolnshire. Patina.

The Morris Ital was finally replaced in 1984 by the Austin Montego, bringing to an end the thirty-five year evolution of the Minor/Marina/Ital line. The Montego, which also replaced the Austin Ambassador, was a decent effort, but not the hit everyone was hoping for. Like the Princess before it, the Montego suffered the indignity of being ‘debranded’ in later life, and lost its Austin badge. This car seen at #FOTU 2024 is actually the last Montego ever.

Another fire truck, but today we’re back in the UK at this year’s Festival of the Unexceptional. This 1972 AEC-based appliance served with Leicester City Fire Brigade but now does duty as a catering vehicle. AEC was a London bus and truck manufacturer that became part of Leyland. Note the Leyland cab and dual Leyland and AEC badging. CRY 999K is an especially appropriate registration plate - 999 is the UK emergency phone number.

In 1976, the BMW E9 coupé was replaced by the E24 6-Series. There was no direct successor to the lesser-spotted economy 2.5 CS E9 featured yesterday in the initial line-up - the new car was available as the 3-litre 630 CS or 3.3-litre 633 CSI. Later, there was a larger engined 635. Judging by its plates, this E24 I saw at #FOTU this year is such a car. Nice - but I’m not sure those wheels do it any favours.

I found some more photos of the BMW 3.0 CSL (taken in the car park, #FOTU, 2024), so I’m using that as an excuse to feature this magnificent car for a second day in a row. These photos show the prominent rear wing and other aerodynamic touches which led to to the CSL being nicknamed the Batmobile. Note that although BMW went to enormous lengths to pare 200 kg off the weight of the CSL, they kept the BMW badges on the rear pillars… (1/2)

Just in case anyone feels cheated because I posted motorcycles rather than cars today as part of the current BMW sequence, here’s a bonus #davidsdailycar featuring the Talbot Alpine hatch and Solara saloon (in other markets, these were earlier badged as Simcas). The Festival of the Unexceptional took place on Saturday, and I saw this pair in the car park of the nearby hotel at which I stayed the night before (first pic) and at the show itself (second pic).

Today, we’re moving on to the third-generation (C3) Audi 100. On the previous C2 model, the Avant was a hatch, but here it became an estate, which set the pattern for the future. Five-cylinder engines were back, and there was the new option of Quattro all-wheel drive. The aero styling was evidence more of NSU rather than Audi genes, I’ve always thought. Snapped at #FOTU 2023.

Yesterday’s Ro80 faded away in the mid-seventies, taking the NSU badge with it. It was effectively replaced by this car, the second-generation (C2) Audi 100, many of which were assembled at the old NSU factory in Neckarsulm. And something of NSU’s taste for innovation was present too. The clue is in the long front overhang - more on that tomorrow. This Avant hatch model was at #FOTU 2024. The Avant badge was later used for Audi’s full estate cars.

Yesterday I mentioned that the Skoda Favorit was updated by Volkswagen and renamed the Felicia. Introduced in 1995, the Felicia had smoothed out bodywork and under the skin changes such as Volkswagen engine options, including diesels. Note the discreet ‘Lauren & Klement’ script on the C pillar of this Combi estate model, which shows that this is the highest spec version. #FOTU 2024.

Although yesterday’s C Coupé was an example of Innocenti completely rebodying a car from its British partner BMC, later British Leyland, for the most of the sixties and into the early seventies, the Italian company built fairly standard versions of the Mini, 1100/1300 and Allegro, albeit with a few interesting refinements. The next full rebodying exercise came with this, the Innocenti Mini hatchback, in 1974. Snapped at #FOTU 2024.

Since we’re on the subject of Renault, I thought I’d randomly throw in one of my favourite modern cars, the first-generation 1990s Renault Twingo. A great design, although I think it works better in the brighter colours rather than the white worn by this example at #FOTU 2024. These were only made with LHD, although some, like this one, made it to the UK anyway.
