W erze wszechobecnego monitoringu, firma optyczna Zenni wprowadziła na rynek powłokę na szkła o nazwie ID Guard, która ma chronić tożsamość noszącego przed systemami rozpoznawania twarzy.
Jak sprawdzili dziennikarze z serwisu 404 Media, produkt technicznie działa, ale jego skuteczność ma bardzo poważne ograniczenie.
Mechanizm działania okularów jest prosty: specjalna powłoka nadaje szkłom lekko różowy połysk, który skutecznie odbija światło podczerwone (IR). Wiele systemów nadzoru, w tym kamery monitoringu miejskiego, a także zaawansowane systemy biometryczne, wykorzystują właśnie podczerwień do skanowania i mapowania twarzy, zwłaszcza w słabym oświetleniu.

Testy przeprowadzone przez 404 Media potwierdziły tę funkcjonalność. Okazało się, że nosząc okulary Zenni ID Guard, nie da się odblokować iPhone’a za pomocą Face ID. System Apple, który do tworzenia mapy 3D twarzy używa właśnie siatki rzutowanych kropek podczerwieni, jest przez powłokę całkowicie blokowany. Podobnie zadziałały testy z kamerami na podczerwień (używanymi np. w fotopułapkach), które zamiast oczu rejestrowały jedynie czarne plamy.
Tu jednak pojawia się kluczowy haczyk. Ochrona ID Guard jest bezużyteczna wobec najprostszej i najbardziej powszechnej formy inwigilacji: zdjęcia zrobionego zwykłym aparatem w świetle widzialnym. Gdy dziennikarz zrobił sobie selfie w okularach i przepuścił je przez popularną wyszukiwarkę twarzy PimEyes, system zidentyfikował go w ciągu kilku sekund.
Okulary Zenni nie są więc magicznym rozwiązaniem na problem cyfrowej inwigilacji. Jak konkluduje Matthew Gault, autor testu i tekstu w 404 Media, sam fakt, że tak duży i popularny sprzedawca okularów zaczyna reklamować „funkcje antymonitoringowe” jako normalny dodatek do szkieł, jest nie tyle ciekawostką technologiczną, co niepokojącym sygnałem czasów, w których żyjemy.
