Photo theme: postboxes

This is the classic British design of pillar box, or free-standing postbox. Iron, cylindrical, bright red, and this one was in Stanley on the Falkland Islands.

The Royal Cypher indicates it's from the reign of George VI and therefore fairly rare as iron priority was given to World War II for a fair chunk of his reign.

It's a very bright, sunny day, with warm tones lighting the scene. We're looking at the wall of a building that fills the view close to us. The building has narrow, overlapping, horizontal wooden boards painted white white a small shadow under each one due to the the sun's high position overhead. The edge of a simple, white wooden-framed window can just be see in the top left and the ground is a textured concrete in beige. Framed within the shot, standing just in front of the building and close enough to take up three quarters of the height of the shot is a classic, red, British postbox. It's an iron cylinder about chest-high on an adult with a thick black base before the bold red takes over up to the top which has a flared cap. The large slot for this postbox is directly at us and there's a rectangular frame below where pickup times could be displayed although it's empty. A Royal Cypher displaying fancy lettering of GR with Roman numerals VI inside it indicates this was from during the reign of George VI. Black lettering "Post Office" is beneath the cypher.

💙 Amour impérial aux Malouines !
Ce couple de cormorans impériaux s'offre un tendre "bec-à-bec" aux allures de "baiser" sur fond de vent salé et de romantisme sauvage.

After our tour of the battlefields we had plenty of time left to explore Stanley and we made use of this with a bit of a walk and admiration of the brightly-coloured roofs, a visit to the museum, some souvenir-purchasing, then a drink in a pub busy with tourists not just from our ship but also from Argentina.

It's a warm, sunny day with barely a cloud in the deep blue sky. We're on a dry lawn looking slightly up a slope to a long building. It's made of grey stone and has a pale green roof. The building is two storeys high and comprises a long middle section with two smaller wings at ninety degrees at each end. From above it probably looks like a classic dog toy bone or a bow tie in shape. A flag pole is to the right with the flag hanging limp and curled around it indicating not a breath of wind.

We had another sea day after visiting the penguins at the nature reserve in Argentina's Punta Tombo and then we arrived at the Falkland Islands. We'd been warned beforehand that getting off the ship at the Falklands wasn't always possible because of the weather conditions but we were lucky enough to arrive on a gloriously sunny day.

After tendering ashore we headed off on an excursion of several hours visiting the battlefield locations from the 1982 Falklands War. Being from Portsmouth we both had memories of being in the crowds when the task force left and returned to the city, and a friend's dad served on HMS Hermes at the time.

The tour had several stops for photos and chats about battles, military attitudes, and anecdotes from our sarcastic guide (most of which went over the heads of the Americans on the tour) and we visited Estancia, Mount Kent, and Mount Harriet.

We're off to one side of a rough, narrow road that winds from our left ahead of us to the right then curves back on itself and up over a rise on the left side where it disappears. The landscape here is one of low, gentle hills and it feels very dry. The road is a coarse route of crushed stone and gravel. The land is a mix of sandy-coloured soil and stone with tufts of dry grass, mostly in yellows and browns but with some greenery near the road verges. Overhead the sky is clear blue, feeling cool, but a mass of bubbling white cloud builds over the hilltop line towards the horizon.
