We had another sea day after visiting the penguins at the nature reserve in Argentina's Punta Tombo and then we arrived at the Falkland Islands. We'd been warned beforehand that getting off the ship at the Falklands wasn't always possible because of the weather conditions but we were lucky enough to arrive on a gloriously sunny day.

After tendering ashore we headed off on an excursion of several hours visiting the battlefield locations from the 1982 Falklands War. Being from Portsmouth we both had memories of being in the crowds when the task force left and returned to the city, and a friend's dad served on HMS Hermes at the time.

The tour had several stops for photos and chats about battles, military attitudes, and anecdotes from our sarcastic guide (most of which went over the heads of the Americans on the tour) and we visited Estancia, Mount Kent, and Mount Harriet.

We're off to one side of a rough, narrow road that winds from our left ahead of us to the right then curves back on itself and up over a rise on the left side where it disappears. The landscape here is one of low, gentle hills and it feels very dry. The road is a coarse route of crushed stone and gravel. The land is a mix of sandy-coloured soil and stone with tufts of dry grass, mostly in yellows and browns but with some greenery near the road verges. Overhead the sky is clear blue, feeling cool, but a mass of bubbling white cloud builds over the hilltop line towards the horizon.

Bonkers long thread so I hope you will stay with me and engage. I'd like to take stock of what is probably the most unnecessary potential for conflict since the . I'm talking about the attempt by the Trump administration to annex Greenland.

Some interesting satellite pictures of the #FalklandsWar where declassified recently, mostly KH-9 Hexagon. I uploaded the most interesting crops to Commons:

Brothers in Arms - one of my fave #AntiWar songs from #DireStraits.

It's about bonds between soldiers on both sides of trenches during the #FalklandsWar.
#MarkKnopfler wrote the song in 1982, when the war happened. Falklands War was a conflict between #Argentina & #UnitedKingdom over islands off the coast of Argentina that each country claims rights to.

A new version of the song was released in 2007 by Knopfler in order to raise money to bring #veterans of the war back to the #Falklands as a way to treat their #PTSD.

Knopfler is one of my fave top 5 guitarists of all time 🎡🎸🎢 He is a brilliant songwriter too.

Carrying ultimate responsibility - which arguably prime ministers do - is not the same as being all powerful - partly because omnipotence assumes omniscience ! There used to be a political convention that a Minister would resign if something went really wrong in the department they were responsible for regardless of whether they were culpable personally. did so in 1982 over the and arguably did so over much more recently.

Turn 12 and the Brits are barely out of San Carlos. Gales have really decimated my schedule. I'm going to lose the #FalklandsWar.

Map of the East Falkland island, with British tokens barely out of their starting zone of San Carlos, but a turn track showing turn 12 of 19 in the foreground.

My mate posted extracts from his dad's published diary of events on Hermes during the #FalklandsWar last year on Twitter to coincide with the 40th anniversary of it all. It was interesting reading.

For #ThrowbackThursday here's a shot from 1982 when my family - like so many other families in #Portsmouth - headed down to #Southsea to see off the task force setting sail for the #Falklands following the invasion by Argentina. That is the aircraft carrier #HMSHermes in shot as our family was friends with another, the father of which ran the boiler rooms aboard.

Colour photo scan of a picture taken in 1982. It's a grey day on the seashore. Grey choppy waves fill most of the view but in the bottom right of the frame there is a gathering of people on some sloping stone walkway down into the water. The people are all looking out to sea where tug boat is leading an aircraft carrier.

There's an interesting #ASUAntarctica2022 thread to follow if you like #science and scenery, and since they're in the #Falklands today I thought I'd share some #TravelPhotography from when we visited back in 2016. We opted to explore the #FalklandsWar battlefields rather than nature options on that trip; you can see wreckage of an Argentinian #Chinook #Helicopter in the third shot. The first #photo is the mizzen mast of the #SSGreatBritain in #Stanley.

#Travel #Photography #FalklandIslands

Bright day, clear blue sky, a deep blue implying cleanliness and freshness. We are standing on a grassy area on one side of a road; the grass is sloping down away from the road so we're looking a little upwards, back towards the road but the road itself is blocked from view by a long, thick, splintered, wooden pole on its side, mounted on concrete supports. This is the mast from an old sailing vessel. Iron bands circle it at regular intervals. Beyond the mast and the road there are buildings; two storeys high, white walls, bright red roofs with green trims over windows and doorways.Bright, clear day, deep blue sky, in a town, standing on one side of an empty road looking across at a church and a few smaller buildings. The church walls are made from small stones and bricks, and the tiles around the windows on the tower and main building, as well as the tall, sloping roofs are brick-coloured as well. At the entrance to the church are whale jaw bones arranged in the form of a skeleton frame of a tent with the four, tall objects curving into a point at the top. A tree fills part of the right of view, with some smaller buildings, white-walled and green-roofed, in the background. Four tourists are on the pavement opposite us, walking past and looking at the whalebone structure and church.A grassy landscape, with the grass short and a yellow-green that indicates a little dryness perhaps. The land is gently undulating with some low hills visible on the horizon to the right of view under some small, puffy white clouds in a bright blue sky. The main focus is on the immediate foreground where the remains of a helicopter can be identified. No part of the external structure exists but there are large turbines and pieces of metal plus one long, drooping rotor blade hanging off the remains of the vehicle's rotor engine. All the metal is heavily rusted and the ground under the wreckage is stony, devoid of grass, indicating a fire that's burnt all the life away.Beside and slightly below a high grassy bank at the side of a road beyond which a range of small, jagged mountains can be seen over a gently undulating grass landscape. The sky is a mixture of blue sky and white clouds and it's very bright here. Erected on the grassy bank to the right of view is a signpost. A red warning triangle contains the silhouette of a skull and crossbones. The wording on a separate rectangular sign beneath it reads "Slow Minefield"

Anyone remember sweeties with blue and white stripes called "Chew Chew Argentinas". Then the #FalklandsWar happened and suddenly they were called "Chew Chew Colas" 🀣
