Yesterday I posted pictures of a pīwakawaka or fantail that was following me as I worked in the orchard, disturbing insects that he was happily eating and gaining weight for the winter. Here is a ‘metalbird art’ fantail also at Beau Vista orchard guarding the lawns. I rather like the use of metal in the art as bird's call is an almost metallic ‘cheek’, either as a single sound or (more often) repeated as a chattering.

Birds of Beau Vista cider orchard. The fantail or pīwakawaka. A small insectivorous bird that incessantly moves around especially when you are working in the orchard and disturb its lunch! Similar to an English robin in behaviour.

This pīwakawaka visitation thing is getting out of hand. I had my doors and windows open this morning and two of them flew through the house and into my lounge. They danced little circles around my head as I opened the sliding door.

As one left via the front door, the other one shot through the house and out the back door.

I feel like they're playing with me.

Here's my favourite moment from today. I was out for my weekly wildcounts run and had stopped to hunch down on the grass to photograph a mushroom, when this inquisitive little fantail landed right in front of my camera.

😄

Bird photography is easy!

A photo of a black colour morph of a NZ South Island fantail, or tīrairaka. It's a small black bird with a big black tail, and a small pointy beak (for catching insects). It's sitting on a brown leaf that's lying on a lawn.

And a cheeky wee fantail just to the top left of the mushroom on the branch in the first photo.

Edit ✍️ I did not pick the mushrooms, they were like that when I got there, I am an observer not a destroyer!!!

A couple of weeks ago, I set out before dawn to capture binaural audio recordings of the elusive Kōkako at Otanewainuku Reserve in New Zealand. While they remained too high in the canopy for me to photograph, I wasn’t disappointed. I managed to record some incredible audio of their calls. In this picture, however, is a little pīwakawaka & Kererū instead. 🫶🦅🌳

Of course! Here’s a mix of hashtags focused on both audio recording and photography:

Here’s a caption for your first PixelFed post:

Kia ora, PixelFed! I’m excited to share my first post—this curious little pīwakawaka (fantail) in perfect side profile. I’m a wildlife photographer based in New Zealand, focusing on birds, marine life, and conservation storytelling. My work captures the vibrant (and sometimes moody) moments of nature, with a mix of fun facts, photography tips, and conservation awareness.

Looking forward to connecting with fellow nature lovers and photographers! Let me know your favorite bird in the comments.

A pīwakawaka (fantail) graced me with its presence when I went out to the compost bin today. It flitted around the bin, possibly hunting little bugs stirred up on the compost. This is the only picture I managed to get of it. I also got several pictures of where the pīwakawaka had been a fraction of a second ago. 😂

The bottom half of the picture shows the top of a black plastic compost bin with the lid off. There is a healthy looking potato plant growing out of it. The top half shows a wooden fence. In the upper right corner a pīwakawaka - a.k.a. fantail - is perched on the fence. It's tail is fanned up. Tail and wings are a bit blurry from movement.

I tried to photograph a very active Grey #Fantail at #Jerrabomberra yesterday evening. Only one shot was in focus, but I like how it showcases their boundless energy.

Small grey bird, with white throat and patches above and behind the eye. The underside is a buffish cream. Even though both feet seem to be gripping a branch, the wings are open and flapping and the fan-shaped tail is spread. It's facing two-thirds away to the right and looks like a tiny grey peacock in mid display.
