The image displays a vintage poster with bold, geometric design elements and vibrant color blocks. The dominant colors are blue at the top left corner labeled "Farm Work," transitioning into white space that leads to red on the bottom right where it states "Rural Electrification Administration." A prominent circular diagram resembling an electric meter or electrical device is featured centrally in black silhouette against a contrasting white background, suggesting its importance. The poster's purpose appears informative and official as indicated by distinct typography: capitalized bold letters for headings with smaller, more legible text below. This design choice emphasizes key information regarding rural electrification initiatives within the administration of this era.

The wall of our barn (where some hay is stored) is certainly several hundred years old. Plucking hay from the haystack by hand can sometimes be exhausting. But the pleasant smell of hay is encouraging. In the past, people had their own tools for this; let's see if I can get hold of something like that or make a replica.

No sooner has the stone area been cleared of the larch logs and chippings than the next batch of firewood arrives. We felled the dead spruce trees (bark beetle wood) near our property. The large pieces are somewhat lighter because the wood hasn’t been sap-filled for several years. The firewood value is also slowly declining. The advantage is that you can burn it right away without needing to store it for a long time.

Our four gray cattle calves can still spend a few weeks outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. They eat like champions and always demand dry meadow hay as a change from fresh grass. They are waiting for fresh hay again. I have to bring two large basket full to the pasture a day. They are supposed to gnaw on young willow shoots in the forest above in the meantime as well. I read an article that said roughage from young shoots reduces greenhouse gases and ammonia in excrement.

On the right side of the image there is a big solitaire cherry tree. Mixed forest consisting of spruce, birch, rowan, aspen and hazelnut trees in their autumn colors under a blue sky in the background.

Our slow Rapid transporter tractor is loaded with a large pile of hay from the second grass cut (known as "Grummet") and parked on a farm path beside a metal shed. Next to the Rapid tractor our Ford 3600. Both solid old 4x4 tractors. This pile (ca. 800kg) is going to another barn nearby, since our is more than full.

A person is visible in the driver's seat. Next to the transporter is a white and blue front loader tractor with a wide bucket attachment. The background features green meadows, scattered trees, and forested hills with the Alps towering in the distance under a clear blue sky with scattered clouds. The scene is bathed in late afternoon sunlight.

Slowly but constantly loading our Rapid tractor by hand with the good stuff. The loading dock's three-way tipper proves useful once again. Today I put on and moved three truckloads of old manure to a good location before the heavy rain hits. Last pile finished.

Cantaloupe tonight. Dad's got the car.
—old joke

“You’re a teenager and think, ‘What the hell are we going to do this summer?’” he said. “Then, ‘What the hell. If nothing else, we’ll go into town every night. We’ll meet some girls. We’ll get cowboys to buy us beer.’” “

Carter paused for dramatic effect. “No.”

Our Rapid tractor fully loaded with a pile of fresh dry hay. Parked on an old stone dry wall with flower such as common bedstraw (galium verum), narrow-leaved willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium), spiniest thistle (Cirsium spinosissimum), stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). A red elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) growing near a boulder stone

Peening my scythe on a sharpening machine mounted on a rock outdoors in a grassy field.
Got the device from the old iron rubbish, a bit bent but works great. Solid made old Stubai peening machine.

New Perrot ZK 30 W sector sprinkler ready installed. No concrete needed, if stones are around. Band-it stainless steel bands working pretty good and doing a good job by fixing the metal bar to the wooden larch posts. Amelanchier tree and further aspen trees in the background. Ready to irrigate field and meadow.

A grassy meadow filled with wildflowers and tall green plants. In the center stands an Amelanchier tree with multiple slender trunks and dense, oval-shaped green leaves. In the foreground, a rustic wooden fence post is reinforced by an upright metal pipe, which is actually part of an irrigation sprinkler system, secured in place with stones around its base. Further uphill, another wooden post is leaning. The background is lined with taller leafy trees beneath a partly cloudy sky.

New wooden splitted larch stake driven into the ground and carrefully wedged with stones to fix and align the new sprinkler with a drain valve at the bottom. I prepared the 1 inch bar in advance, screwed it together and sealed the iron/brass parts with hemp and the bottom Plasson PE coupling with teflon.

A freshly installed rustic wooden fence post stands upright in a grassy area surrounded by wildflowers. The post is natural, unevenly shaped, and appears to be made from solid wood, with some charring visible. It is secured in the ground with a ring of stones. Various hand tools are scattered around on the grass, including a wooden-handled pickaxe, a sledgehammer, a rubber mallet, pliers, and asprinkler with a metal bar. In the background, there is a bushy tree and a lush green meadow.
