It's fun to dunk on #Cloudflare. And those of us who've taken a principled stand against using that service might smirk a little.

But outages happen. #Fastly has them, #Akamai has them, #AWS has them, #Azure has them, #GCP has them. No human system is perfect and will break at some point. The measure of a solution is in the effectiveness of their response. So far, it looks like Cloudflare recovered pretty quickly; I don't doubt that they have good systems and competent professionals in place to manage these events.

It does however cast yet another light on the detrimental consolidation of our infrastructure and should serve as a reminder to seek out decentralization where we can.

Warnung:

Wer Hardware-, Netz- und Infrastrukturmonopole dauerhaft in Wissens-, Archiv-, Kommunikations- und Entscheidungsprozesse einbaut, übernimmt automatisch deren Prioritäten: Lieferkettenabhängigkeit, proprietäre Standards, Remote-Kontrolle, Telemetrie, Ersatzteilknappheit, Firmware-Lock-in, Netzneutralitätsrisiken, Betriebsstörungen durch Konzernentscheidungen.

Ergebnis: Verlust lokaler Resilienz, eingeschränkte Reparierbarkeit, De-Souveränisierung der Infrastruktur, fragile Commons.

Betroffene Ökosysteme (strukturell, nicht moralisch):

Globale Hardware-Hersteller / Geräteplattformen

#Apple #Samsung #Huawei #Lenovo #HP #Dell #Acer #Asus #MSI #Sony #LG

→ Geräte-Lock-in, Firmwarekontrolle, Telemetrie, Reparaturrestriktionen.

Chips / CPU / GPU-Monokulturen

#Intel #AMD #Nvidia #Qualcomm #ARM #TSMC #GlobalFoundries

→ Abhängigkeit von wenigen Fertigern, geopolitische Vorverlagerung, Supply-Chain-Vulnerabilität.

Netzwerk- und Router-Hersteller

#AVM #FritzBox #Cisco #Juniper #Ubiquiti #TPLink #Netgear #HuaweiNetworks #Zyxel #Arista

→ Firmware-/Backdoor-Risiken, zentralisierte Patch-Zyklen, Telemetriekanäle.

Telekommunikations- und Internetprovider

#Telekom #Vodafone #Telefónica #1und1 #Comcast #ATandT #Verizon #Swisscom #Orange #TIM #BT #Telenor

→ Netzabschaltungen, Priorisierung, staatliche Eingriffe, zentrale Single Points of Failure.

Rechenzentrums- und Carrier-Infrastruktur

#Equinix #DigitalRealty #NTT #ChinaTelecom #Level3 #Cogent #Cloudflare (Edge/CDN) #Fastly #Akamai

→ physische Abhängigkeit von wenigen globalen Trassen, Peering-Politik, Routing-Kontrolle.

Energie- & Stromnetz-Abhängigkeiten

#EON #RWE #Vattenfall #EnBW (regional variabel) #SmartMetering #RemoteSwitchOff

→ Infrastruktur in Hand weniger Betreiber, Remote-Abschaltbarkeit, Ausfallketten.

Smart-Home / IoT-Ökosysteme

#PhilipsHue #BoschSmartHome #Tuya #IkeaTradfri #Ring #Nest #Tado #Sonos

→ Cloud-Zwang, Firmware-Shutdowns, Geräte-Deaktivierung bei Firmenentscheidungen.

Satellitennetze / globaler Backhaul

#Starlink #OneWeb #Inmarsat #Iridium

→ geopolitisch sensible Kontrollpunkte über globale Kommunikation.

Kurzfazit:

Is anyone else getting a huge number of bot visits from servers in the Fastly network? I'm seeing junk traffic that approaches low level dDOS numbers and a huge chunk of it is coming from Fastly data centers.

@bsdphk Wonder if this will affect #Fastly's use of Varnish, or perhaps they are big enough to simply pay the licensing fees?

RSL is the missing layer for the AI era: set terms, get attribution, and get paid (per crawl or per inference). Open standard, collective leverage. If AI uses your work, it should respect your license. Time to take control.

Most danish universities run on non-NREN ASs too - either their own, or ...

the biggest danish universities' web servers run on #Microsoft and #Fastly #AS :)

(to be fair, web server doesnt say a lot about rest of their infrastructure)

AI crawlers and fetchers are blowing up websites, with Meta and OpenAI the worst offenders, by Gareth Halfacree

theregister.com/2025/08/21/ai_

> One fetcher bot seen smacking a website with 39,000 requests per minute

> Cloud services giant #Fastly has released a report claiming AI crawlers are putting a heavy load on the open web, slurping up sites at a rate that accounts for 80 percent of all AI bot traffic, with the remaining 20 percent used by AI fetchers.
