I bought a stack of old local postcards. Cambridge (town not gown) and some from the Fens. Amongst them was a brilliant Fabulous Fenland card showing off a local onion farm.

Anyway, on the back was the URL for the publisher who turned out to be this genius art gallery in a caravan which produces art that celebrates "overlooked and occasionally bizarre aspects of everyday life".

This could be a useful new route to/from the Smeeth but this development will also turn the #A47 Broadend Road crossroads into a roundabout which could be good or bad #space4cycling

A clear blue sky behind a tall tree emerging from a high hedgerow.

Hedge and tree are bright with the vivid green of early summer. The tree has two main trunks and many branches, and is more than 15 metres tall, but only spreads about half of that. The trunk of the tree in the first picture, showing the luxuriant growth of hedgerow plants around it and the wrinkled bark of a tree a couple of centuries old.

The trunk, before it splits at aroun 4 metres up, is shown mid frame, with blue sky behind it and a wash of greenery to the left and right. At the tom the lower branches and twigs are lively with both leaves and fruiting bodies, the famed winged seeds of the sycamore are forming alreadyLooking up the trunk of the tree in the first image from ground level The trunk and branches fill the image, dappled with sunlight coming from the leavy canopy.A wider view of the whole canopy, filled with spreading limbs and dividing branches The extraordinary ability of a tree to fill the whole skyward view and catch as much light as possible is revealled.

A bit of #fun. My attempt to #map #historic #dialect terms for the #stickleback. Which is your #favourite? What #names are #local to you? When did you last see/catch one? They used of congregate in their millions in #Fenland #ditches and #dykes. #Farmers even used #fresh sticklebacks as #manure, spread straight on to their #fields. I hope you like the #scale. Enjoy! #Fish #Language #Biodiversity #Crisis #River #Stream #Pollution #UK #England #Wales #Scotland #NorthernIreland #Ireland #IsleOfMan

A simple map of the British Isles in light green. On it, in black text, old names for the stickleback in their approximate geographical location. Certain locations in ordinary text; uncertain at 45 degree angle. Title 'Dialectal terms for the Stickleback'. Image of stickleback top left. Map scale based on average length of a stickleback!

Life and Landscape on the
Peter Henry Emerson, photographer

Gathering Water-Lilies, 1886 Platinum print,
The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles CA

"Initially published as a limited-edition photogravure, this photograph of a man and a woman in a rowboat subsequently appeared in Peter Henry Emerson's first book, Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads. Emerson preferred book or album presentation so that text could accompany the image. He advocated naturalism in photography, which meant that he believed photographs should represent nature as truthfully as possible without manipulation by the photographer. Emerson's writings indicated his passion for photography. He declared: "...we must first see the picture in nature and be struck by its beauty so that we cannot rest until we have secured it on our plate...

He derived his subject matter from rural life in the marshy, coastal region of East Anglia, northeast of London. The book features images of laborers, and this peaceful scene is no exception: as the man rows, the woman gathers flowers to use as bait for fishing. Water-lilies were placed in a large bow net, like the one behind the oarsman in this image. The bow net was then sunk to trap tench, a fish common to these waters. Emerson sought a moment of tender beauty as the woman reaches into the water to collect a blossom."

Half term so the girls and I headed north across the Fens and along a drove (sat nav madness) to Fens Falconry where we spent a very lovely evening learning about their owls and watching them fly.

Another wet day in the fenlands of Lincolnshire.

Trinity Bridge in Crowland is a 14th century triangular bridge that was built to cross the confluence of the River Nene and the Welland.

I have yet to discover where the water went after the two rivers joined 🤷‍♀️

@typejunky another lovely essay. Thanks. So beautifully written and evocative. My family also migrated from Yorkshire (from the village Harpham- still my surname) to the fens. To grow potatoes and keep pigs. My father had to leave school aged 11 to tend them. Here’s a memory of my #fenland. #aiart
