I was staring as Dorian today, as I try to do at least once a day, observing just how much has changed since the summer. Another picture of my gray feral cat Dorian sitting on the sidewalk outside, staring towards me. This is a more recent picture, taken months after the other. Dorian's fur is well groomed and clean, his stripped tabby pattern showing nicely against his gray fur. His eyes give sense of mild suspicion about his surroundings, but no longer has that look of desperation. He is slightly bigger, having gained a little weight after eating regular meals for months.

Has anyone else noticed significantly more feral cats in the Sydney area? It seemed to happen very quickly in the last year or so.

That’s quoted from a good article this morning by Farah Hancock on #RNZ, on NZ’s big problem with feral cats and the social tension around what to do with them. “Predator-free” without dealing with feral cats makes no sense.

The inclusion of feral cats comes after years of campaigning, and has faced significant public opposition in the past. When environmentalist Gareth Morgan launched his “Cats to Go” campaign in 2013, it was met with horror. A competition encouraging children to shoot feral cats saw pushback from animal rights groups.
