#WordWeavers: What would it take for your character to become violent?

This question sums up one of the main themes in my #FindingHumanitySeries: Is nonviolence viable in a violent world? Multiple “humanoid” (quotes because the Ruined would kill me for comparing them to humans, lol) species exist on future Earth. The star beings are nonviolent. Being so is essential to their survival, and they believe humans can eventually do the same. But the star beings get tested by Human and Ruined drama.

#WordWeavers: How does your MC respond to danger?

In my upcoming WIP:

Bleu: Freezing, fighting, and once simply Facing it.

Rana: Her nonviolent version of fighting (hey, it’s hard to explain, she’s not human, lol)

Kahali: Freeze & Conscious use of Fawn (also not human)

Commander Savas: Usually he’s all fight, but we get a freeze too

Atsushi: Flee

Digga: Fight like hell, what else would you expect from a cave digger.

Given what they face, I’m with Atsushi.😂😂

#WordWeavers:
Is understanding others easy for your MC?

Bleu grasps most people, but doesn’t always “get” when his friends discuss dating because he’s ace and none of his friends are.

Rana can read peoples’ minds, so she gets them, unless they’re human. She doesn’t understand the human penchant for violence.

Commander Savas understands others enough to have mastered manipulating them, and figuring out the best way to do so.

#WordWeavers: Do your characters celebrate any kind of a new year starting or ending?

In my WIP, The Ruined, no. They celebrate what should be the seasons as in equinoxes and solstices, but the humans think of the planet a bit like snowball earth. It’s an ice age, which is different, but despite their value on science, their anger at the ice age blinds them to what’s truly happening on the Surface.

#WordWeavers: How good at saying goodbye is your antagonist?

Hakan has seen too much death of those he loves. He’s a bit numb to loss, though only his best friend (Mican) knows it, because he appears normal to his people.

One of my friends is reading my book and has called twice to complain not about my book, but that the battery on her e-reader has died and she got tossed out of my book world, needing to plug in her device.😂😂😂

#WordWeavers: What part of your antagonist’s personality makes them so antagonistic?

For Commander Savas, it’s his all-encompassing belief that he must save the last of humanity at all costs. Sounds good on the surface, but he’s willing to sacrifice everyone to that goal, and won’t take any risks trusting anyone or anything that could harm humans.

I started writing The Calling at the original heyday of dystopian literature (2011), and specifically wrote it to seem in the beginning like a “Dystopian, chosen one” trope that later gets usurped to “Hopepunk, no chosen one, everyone is responsible,” … 1/2

…because I felt we all needed new stories where each of us can affect things and make a difference, where society CAN change to overcome violence, & we CAN live in harmony with our planet. It’s multiple POV because the real MC is all of humanity.

#WordWeavers: Were there any other names you considered for your MC?

Usually, my characters tell me their names. Bleu told me only that he had to be named Blue, but it could be any language. After a lot of research, I went with the French, because it’s close enough to English that hopefully his mother naming him after the sky she’s never seen will be more obvious.

#WordWeavers: SC POV: Who knows your deepest secrets?

Jeb (Human, in his sixties): My deepest secret, my deepest shame, haunts me forever. We do stupid things when young, and I really fucked up. *Voice lowers* Only my dead best friend, and the Ruined that murdered him know what really happened….
All my fault…and I’m worried sick that kid Bleu’s risking a similar mistake.

Just finished reading Branwen O'Shea's The Calling

Now what am I going to do?

It had me reading and reading in the middle of the night when I should have been asleep and if that is not the definition of a good book, I don't know what is. Complex. Inventive. Rich in imagination. Packed with characters you would want as your friends (and a few you wouldn't). Excellent

Ever think humans can do better than this mess?
That’s what my series is really about. Yes, it’s lots of adventure & conflict, but essentially it asks can we change? No chosen one. No elite team. Just a bunch of teens and adults trying to shift things before it’s too late.

#WordWeavers: SC POV: What is the last thing you celebrated?

Zach: “Celebrate? Not much. Closest is when we found a safe place to land the helicopters and make camp. Had a nice fire, and learned that on top of everything else, the star beings are all excellent musicians as well. Sometimes they’re just too perfect. *Shudders* But it was the most fun we’ve had in a while.”
