Rode with Penny up to the village cardboard recycle drop-off to get rid of about 4 months of cardboard.

Town is kind of busy with everyone getting the last loaf of bread and gallon of milk before the blizzard gets here.

Noticed they put a #Flock camera up. What an odd place for a Flock, of all places in our small village, unless it has high crime activity, like drugs. It's open 24/7. Going to report it to the Flock database.

When we had that multiple victim murder last year, I know the village and county was able to track the person by cameras in real time for 266 miles and literally snatched him as he was pulling off an interstate off-ramp without a clue.

Unfortunately, the Law & Justice committee approved really horrible amended version of SB 6002, the Driver Privacy Act. There will still be other chances to strengthen it, but this is a big setback -- especially since it was already too weak.

#Ring could (as can choose to) share video with #Flock or local police and therefore #ICE, except† if end to end encryption is enabled, but that prevents other users (e.g spouse, children) from seeing live and stored video on their devices. Ridiculous. Ring creates an encryption passcode string it tells you to save. They don't let you install that passcode on devices you choose to share access with to allow encrypted sharing? Why? Unencrypted video can be used to make money, of course. Disabling essential features for security is a trade off most users won't make.

† Sure, Ring states they don't share if you say no to a request email you can opt out of, however their poor record with privacy issues and data leaks means you have to trust them. Do you trust them? Do you feel lucky?

Today's hearings on regulating Flock and other ALPRs were intense. I live-skeeted it on Bluesky ... here's a one-page version via a thread-unroller. It takes a few seconds to load, sorry about that.

It's clearly going to be a tough fight. The testimony from groups pushing to strength it -- including Lavender Rights Project, OneAmerica, ACLU of Washington, Pro-Choice Washingotn, and Planned Parenthood, and NYU Project on Policing -- was great. (I didn't get to testify at either hearing and neither did several others pushing to strengthen it, sigh.) But, there was also a lot of testimony by Flock, law enforcement, and their allies pushing to weaken it. The sponsor talked about finding a middle path which is very frankly not what I want to hear when it comes to surveillance and keeping data from getting to ICE/CBP.

So we're going to need some strong advocacy here. If you're in Washington state, you have until tomorrow morning to provide written testimony -- the actions in the quoted tweet and its reply have links and talking points.

My county has gone in whole-hog for #ALPR cameras, specifically the Flock brand. My municipality has laws for police access to their license-plate reading data, but I don’t know if #Flock themselves withhold it from ICE/ #Palantir, who’s stated they want to build a database on everyone in the USA!
Now I’m taking carefully planned routes to avoid the cams & airplane moding my cellphone when I travel. I grew up when robust consumer & civil rights protections were the norm. I’m not adapting well.
