Ah yes, because nothing screams "serious flood disaster prevention" quite like building pixelated dams in a blocky children's game 🌧️💧. Clearly, the Japanese government has cracked the code on disaster management by trading sandbags for diamond pickaxes 🪓🎮. Next up: lessons on fire safety 🔥🏃‍♂️.

Results of our dig looking for Romans in Edmonton... resoundingly negative!
Despite early C20th digs showing Roman industry less than 100m away, they evidently kept clear of this spot next to Salmon's Brook.
Disappointing for us but probably good news for the planned flood relief ponds which we now know will not impact any Roman archaeology.

"National Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said Bahia Blanca was "destroyed." " From a storm which brought as much rain in a few hours on Friday as the town receives in a year.

Looking at Google Earth, the whole city is blocks after blocks after blocks of 2-storey buildings without any parks anywhere.
The last storm in December 2023 also left collapsed houses and roads in ruins.
Maybe, just maybe, rebuilding efforts everywhere should start to include #sustainability considerations: build 6-storey houses, with 35m2 of heated/cooled living space per person, plus 15m2 per additional person, and add parks.
What good is science if its results are ignored, eh?

In good news, cities are learning how to deal with heavy rainfall so it doesn't flood the streets. 🙂

Vancouver restored a buried creek to the surface, and added plants and trees along its course to help the rain soak in.
In October's atmospheric river, the restored creek absorbed 150% the expected rain, with no overflow. Rainways like this help refill the water table and prevent flooding.

In recent decades Kidwelly has regularly experienced flooding. In October 2021 there were two large flood events which led to approximately 10 properties being internally flooded each time. At the north end of Kidwelly, it was the steep ordinary watercourse that runs north to south above Cae Ffynnon that bursts its banks with devastating impacts for residents downstream.

Carmarthenshire County Council have said that works on a Culvert scheme at Ferry Road in Kidwelly are underway, with contractors GD Harries making significant progress. A working compound has been established, and the culverting works in the downstream section are nearing completion.

The Council says that as the project moves forward, the next phase of works will focus on the highway section. While this phase will involve some disruption, a full road closure will not be necessary. Traffic will continue to flow with the implementation of a traffic light system. The lights will include a pedestrian override for safety and, to further ease congestion, they will be manned during peak hours.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Decarbonisation and Sustainability – Cllr Aled Vaughan Owen said: “I am pleased to update that drainage upgrade works have commenced at Ferry Road, Kidwelly to better manage the flood risk in the area.

“The County Council understands the importance of minimising inconvenience to the area and we appreciate the community’s patience as we work to enhance the local flood infrastructure.”

“The Ferry Road Culvert Scheme project remains on schedule, with completion anticipated by the start of December 2024.”
