Speak Flowers and Fans by Teagan Riordain Geneviene

Speak Flowers and Fans – a Dictionary of Floriography and Fanology by Teagan Riordain Geneviene

Every once in a while, a book arrives that feels less like reading and more like being invited into a conversation with imagination itself. Teagan Riordain Geneviene’s Speak Flowers and Fans: A Dictionary of Floriography and Fanology is just that kind of book — one that enchants, teaches, and lingers.

Teagan has always had a gift for creating worlds where the whimsical and the profound walk hand in hand. In Speak Flowers and Fans, she takes us back to the lost languages of floriography and fanology, where a flower or a gesture with a fan could communicate what words dared not. It is both playful and deeply human — a reminder that creativity finds its way into the smallest details of our lives, even into the silent messages of petals and silk.

Speak Flowers and Fans – a Dictionary of Floriography and Fanology by Teagan Riordain Geneviene

As I turned the pages, I felt as though I were gathering secret notes from another time, yet the messages still feel relevant today. Flowers, fans, and symbolism become bridges, connecting us to emotion, memory, and possibility. Teagan’s imagination makes these connections vivid and irresistible.

This is not just a book to read once and shelve. It is a book to return to, to dip into when you want to be inspired, or when you need to remember that creativity is not bound by words alone. It can be carried by colour, shape, gesture, or even silence.

For me, Speak Flowers and Fans was a reminder of why we read: not only to escape, but to rediscover how extraordinary the ordinary can be when we look closely.

My Takeaway:

Teagan’s work embodies the joy of creation — bold, imaginative, and life-affirming. This book is a celebration of how symbols carry meaning, and how creativity opens up new languages to us.

Thank you, Teagan, for sharing this imaginative treasury. I know I’ll return to it often.

Rebecca

It's not just local beer we serve at the brewpub. We source our wine menu from local importers such as #SpiegelAndPeach.

This is our extremely popular and well balanced Vigneti Romio Sangiovese from Italy, a ruby red with notes of ripe black cherries and a delicious bit of spice.

So, next time you're in and don't fancy a pint, kick back and give this a go.

(and a big thank you to #Floriography for always providing our table flowers 🙏 🌺 )

Little pops of early summer colour adorn our tables this week courtesy of our lovely neighbour #Floriography. We've restocked our Trebbiano house white thanks to #SpiegelAndPeach, cos sunshine, we've got plenty of rosè too?

Beers on this week include Extra Nice Lager from #LostAndGrounded, Bolt Hazy Pale from #SomerValley and Bob's Best from #GoodChemistry.

Not feeling booze? We've also topped up on kombucha from Bedminster's #CounterCulture. Plus, it's Dog & A Pint deal night. Ask for deets.

Some time ago, I got interested in #floriography, the system of communicating with bouquets of flowers. I thought it would be fun to draw a few #PixelArt flowers (now in #Pico8 colors) for their meaning and visual aesthetic value.
This particular #MastoArt is lily of the valley, which according to Language of Flowers (which you can read in this #ProjectGutenberg ebook: gutenberg.org/cache/epub/31591) means "Return of happiness."

From earlier this year! I streamed for 6 hours doing just this one lol. Hoping to put up the edited timelapse eventually later on my Youtube but in the meantime--

Characters are my Lady Rosalyn and Lady Lillian from a story of mine. The one on the right is me trying to adjust the colors and liking the accidental pixel game "aesthetic."

Color illustration of two women dressed in garbs similar to knightly orders. The woman on the left wears underneath it a red and yellow tunic, while the one on the right wears a blue and yellow tunic. Both of their hats are different, with the left wearing a white feather and yellow hat and the right wearing a brown leather hat with a red ornament.

The woman on the left looks to be attentive to something off-screen while the one on the right appears to be enjoying whatever's going on off-screen.Color illustration of two women dressed in garbs similar to knightly orders. This is a different version, with colors reminiscent of old pixel games.

And then today's actual entry, which is from a story in...well, it's sorta in the air at what stage it is in lol, maybe pre-planning since I'm thinking of readjusting it to be a visual novel instead. We'll see!

All of the captions for these posts will be copy/pasted from my tumblr: jadinerhine.tumblr.com/post/13 Of course, you can take a look on there ahead of time. MIND THE 7 YR OLD CRINGE.

:ai_wave: Lady Orkidya and Lady Clavelle :ai_wave:

Knights of the Orchid and Carnations respectively, these two sometimes get along pretty well but usually aren’t a normal Pair of Friends[TM]. Orkidya is much more active than Clavelle for one, and prefers more typical ‘masculine’ activities; she’s in charge of the horse stables just to note one of her duties. Clavelle on the other hand likes tranquility – tea hobbies, taking care of gardens, walking, etc. Each one has their preferred person to share these things with, and each one is not the other’s first choice XD

But Clavelle tries her best to come out of her shell and this is one of those times! Orkidya ain’t havin’ it, though.

Up above you’ll see Clavelle’s hair is blonde-ish; she’s actually albino, and that’s one of my old studies to see how coloring her “pre-Knighthood” works. I disagree with the coloring style used for albino characters’ skin because they look dead. (Grey shading, eww.) I figured out how to draw extremely pale skin recently however, so I’ll be using that as a basis next time I do another study. Her real ethnicity is a secret until comictime c: Orkidya’s name suggests hers, however.

Black and white inked chibi figures. There are two people here, both dressed similarly in variants of a tunic with flowers on the chest. The one on the left is holding a horse's leash, dressed in black pants as well. She's a little annoyed at the other woman and is telling her not to ride a horse in pictorial form. The other woman, holding an umbrella to protect her from the sun, is wearing a long dress. She seems a little sad and is wanting to ride a horse and telling her in the same pictorial form.

Yeah, the speech bubble from the woman in the dress goes first but that's the way alt text goes, I suppose.

Phlox Paniculata, a flower from the central and eastern United States.

In the Victorian language of flowers, phlox meant 'unanimity'.

According to legend, knights in the Middle Ages would wear two daisies to show he was the favourite of the ladies.

Dreaming of daises in the spring or summer means good luck is coming, but dream of them in autumn or winter and bad luck is coming.

In the Victorian language of flowers, the daisy meant "innocence" and "I share your sentiments".

Clematis is also known as Leather Flower, Old Man's Beard, Pepper Vine, Traveller's Joy, and Virgin's Bower.

The ancient Greeks used 'clematis' to refer to a whole range of climbing plants.

It can symbolise artifice, ingenuity, love, and want.

According to Mrs Burke's 1856 Illustrated Language of Flowers, it means 'mental beauty'.
