#Calendula is an excellent addition to any food or pollinators gardens. It's an amazing multi-purposeful annual plant that is easy to grow. It is #edible, #medicinal & is also a fave flower choice for #NaturalDye makers 😊
It's sometimes called poor man's saffron as it can be substituted for saffron in #culinary recipes. Most British folks call it pot's gold because it's used in broths/soups.

Did you know that despite its name - #JapaneseAnemone - that this pretty #perennial #plant isn't actually from Japan?
It was introduced there, hundreds of years ago & became naturalized. It is actually native to China, #Taiwan#Vietnam.
It's been cultivated in gardens, worldwide.

Hundreds of years ago, a form of E. hupehensis with smaller, semi-double flowers & pink sepals escaped cultivation and spread across #China to #Japan & #Korea. After finding this form in a #Shanghai graveyard in 1843, the plant explorer/ #botanist Robert Fortune sent it home to England where it became known as E. japonica, the Japanese anemone. European #horticulturists crossed the Japanese anemone with E. vitifolia to produce #cultivars of the artificial hybrid E. × hybrida.

#Hardhack aka #RoseSpirea - #SpiraeaDouglasii

#NativePlant in #PacificNorthwest regions. We've used this plant at several habitat/ecological restoration areas - across Southern #VancouverIsland. It is an excellent plant for riparian revegetation & pollinators love their bright pink, tiny flowers too.

#PNW #Indigenous peoples use the plant for making brooms & for hanging seafood to cook.

It grows in almost any soil conditions, even very dry & gravelly soil but prefers boggy/wet areas.

I wait, patiently, every Summer, for my #purple #liatris flowers to bloom. They started blooming, this weekend 😍

What's unique & interesting about liatris?

Their flowers bloom downwards & not upwards, like most other flowering perennial plants.
They're also food plants for larvae of some #Lepidoptera species including the #Flower #Moths #SchiniaGloriosa & #SchiniaSanguinea - both feed exclusively on liatris plants.
