The banjo & fiddle are a part of the Okefenokee Swamp just like cypress knees and alligators. A swamp frolic would involve music, storytelling, dancing and good ol' southern fun. (1 of 2) #SwampSunday #Okefenokee #Bluegrass #FolkWitch

Excerpt from the book "Okefinokee Album" by Francis Harper. It reads: "The naturalist wrote down almost everything he heard the swampers say or sing, including those short tunes played at “frolics” (old-fashioned square dances) by fiddlers and banjo pickers. He particularly liked The Catfish, “Sally Goodin’,” and this colorful ditty:
Jaybird died of the whoopin’ cough,
Bullfrog died of the cholic.
Jack came along with a fiddle on his back
And asked ’em all to the frolic."Photo of Hamp Mizell strumming his homemade banjo. May 1930. Taken by naturalist Francis Harper and featured in his book "Okefinokee Album"

Musicians Rhiannon Giddens & Justin Robinson new album "What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow" captures the spirit of swampy southern bluegrass! Do yourself a favor and go have a listen to their album! (2 of 2) #SwampSunday #Bluegrass #FolkWitch youtu.be/CwPEPne-qzU?...

Brother Red Tail Hawk was showing out in our neighborhood yesterday! 🥰 The songbirds were given him hell! 😂 I managed to catch a mockingbird in this capture. Brother Hawk was not amused. #WitchSky #WitchAlt #FolkWitch #Raptor

Known for its ethereal song & the ability to sing in two voices simultaneously, the Wood Thrush is more often heard than seen in the Okefenokee Swamp. Hearing a "Swamp Angel" sing its beautiful song near your house is said to be very good luck. (1 of 2) #SwampSunday #OkefenokeeSwamp #FolkWitch

Photo by: John Petruzzi. Their breasts and bellies are white with black or dark brown round spots like a Dalmatian's. They have dull white rings around their eyes. Like many other thrushes, wood thrushes have unusually large eyes, which helps them see and navigate in the shady forests they prefer.

Granny ("Dr Mary") knew herbs to help women carry a child to birth. "Squaw vine"/Partridgeberry was recommended for bathing in, & as a tea to help protect an unborn child. Keeps away the evil eye, and other baneful workings - especially from envious folks. #FolkyFriday #FolkWitch #WitckSky

Pineland Daisy (Night-nodding Bog-dandelion) Chaptalia tomentosa, is a southern cognate to the European Daisy. Excellent for attracting the local Gentry or Faye. By its own nature, an energy of drawing forth. #FolkyFriday #FolkWitch #Pellorys #WitchSky #WitchAlt

A witch learns about their local spirits, herbs/worts, trees, and animals. They know the ones to call upon for healing and hexing, and who is a friend or foe. I've been having spring chats with dear Spiderwort which grows abundantly in my area. #FolkyFriday #FolkWitch #WitchSky #WitchAlt

A photo I took of spiderwort / smooth spiderwort (T. ohiensis) here in Georgia. Bright violet colored blossoms.

In Pellorys, Stinging Nettle is a plant of fire. It removes fear and repels evil. In fact, it will return dark magic to its maker. #FolkloreThursday #Pellor #FolkWitch

Devil's Dung (asafoetida) is used to repel evil, or harm enemies within Southern Conjure. My Grannies, used it to cure a many ailments - bad cough, to overall weakness. My Mom tells of getting it as a child. I bet it cured MOST everything that she had "wrong". #FolkloreThursday #FolkWitch

Devil's Dung, or as my Granny called it "asafetidy", asafoetida is a foul smelling herb used to prevent disease. In southern conjure it is used to get revenge or reverse a trick. #FolkloreThursday #FolkWitch

Carry a buckeye (Aesculus flava) in your *right* pocket to find a job. If you need a cure for rheumatism or the chills, carry it in your *left* pocket. These beliefs are tied to the strength, vigor, of a buck! #FolkloreThursday #SouthernConjure #FolkWitch

My paternal Granny, "Dr Mary", was a midwife, herbalist, & preparer of the dead. A cough remedy, which I have made & used, was made from young pine tree tops pinched off, honey, lemon, & a shot of whiskey. Sometimes hard peppermint candy was added to the mix. #FolkloreThursday #FolkWitch

Oaks have long been associated with lightning. A Southern Appalachian belief is that by placing an acorn on a window will the house will be protected from lightning strikes. #FolkloreThursday #WitchSky #FolkWitch

Spent some time in the cool morning air weeding one of my gardens. While strolling around the yard, I spent time communing with a lovely patch of Cutleaf Evening Primrose (Oenothera laciniata). The dew still heavy on the petals. #FolkWitch #WitchSky #WitchAlt #Herbs #Worts

The Okefenokee Swamp & surrounding areas use to be a hotbed of turpentine production. Brother Pine-Tree gives us turpentine. My paternal Granny would mix melted lard & turpentine, slather it over chests, cover this flannel cloth when family had a bad cough/cold! #SwampSunday #FolkWitch #WitchAlt

Photo taken by Francis Harper (American naturalist, who studied the Okefenokee Swamp region) on 4-9-1932. Photo shows residents gathered around a pine tree that had been "chipped" for resin which was turned into turpentine.

There is an old wives' tale that that if a "snapper" bites you, it won't let go till it hears thunder. I don't know about you, but this monster? I wouldn't want to test that tale to find out! #SwampSunday #Okefenokee #FolkWitch #WitchSky #SuwanneeAlligatorSnappingTurtle youtu.be/LWptdET1KMg?...

Called the "flame bird" of the swamp, the Prothonotary Warbler is one of the most gorgeous birds you'll encounter in the Okefenokee. Said to be vain, it will stare at its own reflection. Not wise since many predators are about! 📷 by Edward O’Connor #SwampSunday #FolkWitch #WitchSky #WitchAlt

Photo by: Edward O’Connor. Photo shows a Prothonotary Warbler looking at its reflection in the water. These birds are bright golden yellow with blue-gray wings and tail and a yellow-olive back. Its beady black eye stands out on its solid yellow face. Seen from below, it has white under the tail. Females are often paler yellow than males.

My husband & I delight every year when the incredible Swallow Tailed Kites begin to soar over our neighborhood! These pernine raptors are so beautiful! Very rarely will you ever see them flap their wings - instead, they soar on the wind currents! Always a wonderful augury! #FolkWitch #Augury
