“The primary goal was to investigate the genotoxicity of 32 commonly consumed food additives and six mixtures corresponding to dietary exposure in France. While our findings indicate the potential toxicity of some combinations, further research is needed to determine whether the in vitro concentrations used are predictive of a possible human health risks.” #DNA #ISOGG #epigenetics #foodadditives #geneadons

review article from 2019:

Who will carry out the tests that would be necessary for proper safety evaluation of food emulsifiers?
doi.org/10.1016/j.fshw.2019.04

"The earliest studies investigated the co-carcinogenic potential of surfactants. As early as in the 1950s, Wong and coworkers published that polysorbate 80, when fed together with a known carcinogen (a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon: methylcholanthrene) significantly potentiates the local as well as distant carcinogenic activity in mice [20]. As polysorbate alone did not show any carcinogenic activity, authors concluded that polysorbate is co-carcinogen. "

...

"The impacts of surfactants on intestinal barriers were investigated already in the 1980’s. Tagesson et al. [24] in 1984 warned that surface-active food additives might impair the function of the mucosal barrier and increase the permeability of the gut to potentially toxic and pathogenic substances. In this paper polysorbate 60 and polysorbate 80 were studied on rat intestinal mucosa and found mucosal damage and increased permeability. It should be noted that this paper warned more than 30 years ago that increased absorption of macromolecules may facilitate the development of celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases and food allergy. Let us quote verbatim from their conclusion: 'it is possible that certain food additives may facilitate the intestinal absorption of potentially toxic and pathogenic compounds. This possibility should not be overlooked, since alterations in intestinal permeability may underlie a variety of diseases, not only in the gastro-intestinal tract itself but at distant sites such as the liver and joints.' Unfortunately, too little attention has been paid to this very important suggestion at that time."

I am more the chemical-concerned consumer. So edgy that I remember printing out a sheet with the E-numbers of food additives and using it in the supermarket.

Then, at the university, learning about chemistry and toxicology made me worry *much more*.

I have to say, one of the few actually useful things of a smartphone are apps like yuka, that allow you to scan food & cosmetics and return a rather accurate scoring, taking in mind the additives.
I really recommend using them, as it is a rather easy and convenient way when having standing in front of 100 different shampoo brands and wanting to pick the least toxic one.
Overall, the yuka rating matches quite well with what I would say after doing the research*, but is much quicker.

The app is maintained by an French independent nonprofit.

* the only two things are a) yes, I *know* that potato chips are too salty and fatty and b) the penalty for natural essential oils in cosmetics is for my taste too large, but as there are people with allergies and sensitivity issues, it might be justified.

Can somebody help me with a cup of E509 stabiliser? It's my favourite.

This sand"witch" mayo has 7(seven) Exxx additives and holds up its appeareance for a year. Also it has one ingredient just called "aroma".

I think I would be able to autoradiograph after consuming this.

This is something kids ordered, but they will be disappointed.

#TruthinLabeling #FoodAdditives I for one am extremely happy to see this happening. It’s long past time that America had truth in labeling. As one with numerous food/additive sensitivities, I can only see this being good for consumers. Trump actually weakened requirements on labels during the pandemic, and of course so much is hidden because of the enormous food industry lobby. I really would like to know what I’m putting in my body. No more migraines might be nice! statnews.com/2023/08/21/kellog.
