I am more the chemical-concerned consumer. So edgy that I remember printing out a sheet with the E-numbers of food additives and using it in the supermarket.
Then, at the university, learning about chemistry and toxicology made me worry *much more*.
I have to say, one of the few actually useful things of a smartphone are apps like yuka, that allow you to scan food & cosmetics and return a rather accurate scoring, taking in mind the additives.
I really recommend using them, as it is a rather easy and convenient way when having standing in front of 100 different shampoo brands and wanting to pick the least toxic one.
Overall, the yuka rating matches quite well with what I would say after doing the research*, but is much quicker.
The app is maintained by an French independent nonprofit.

* the only two things are a) yes, I *know* that potato chips are too salty and fatty and b) the penalty for natural essential oils in cosmetics is for my taste too large, but as there are people with allergies and sensitivity issues, it might be justified.
