🚨BREAKTHROUGH ALERT!🚨
Using a #CRISPR/Cas9-facilitated targeted knockout of the betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase #genes AhBADH1 and AhBADH2, Xue et al. have created the first fragrant🥜#peanut lines!

A combination of diagrams, graphs and morphological images of WT and Fragrant peanut lines illustrates that targeted knockout of the betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase genes AhBADH1 and AhBADH2 using CRISPR/Cas9 produces mutant lines with significantly elevated 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline levels and a strong aroma, marking the first creation of fragrant peanut lines.

Very excited to read this recent #tea research paper. It's basically where I would have gone next if I'd kept on with tea research after my PhD (based on the title and abstract, at least). I'll *try* to find time to write a plain-English summary as a thread here when I get a chance to read it.

Do you know what's in your #yoghurt? Traditionally, yoghurt is produced by fermenting milk with two different bacteria at the same time. Most people have heard of Lactobacillus, because it's well known for being marketed for better gut health, but many people look surprised when I mention that Streptococcus is the other bacterium that makes yoghurt. You may think about Strep throat infections, but no worries, this Streptococcus is completely safe! Let's investigate! #FoodSci #Microbiology

This week, I'm back in the Pilot Plant to finish experiments we couldn't run 6 weeks ago because of force majeure on the logistics front. I'm very excited that in 2-3 weeks' time, we will have a full dataset on these trials, but it also means the end of the fun bit and the start of A) writing the report and B) the follow-up experiments, including a 2 year shelf life study. It feels like an accomplishment and just a small step in a long process at the same time. #AltAc #FoodSci #ProcessTechnology

Another week of pilot plant experiments coming up. Hopefully we've been able to iron out the kinks last week as we don't have time for fuck-ups this week. Looking forward to Thursday / ascension day as the stress will be over by then. Can't wait to study the data though :blobcat: #FoodSci

I got my chili going for tonight. First time this year, and my first time making it vegetarian. Pretty excited.

Hello again! I decided it was time for an updated #introduction. I'm Timo, a food microbiologist turned process developer. Recently made the move to #AltAc after serious mental health issues during my PhD. Apart from posting on #Microbiology, #FoodSci (Beer, wine and dairy in particular), I'm also involved in Inclusive Diversity initiatives. In my free time, I love to cycle, listen to podcasts and play #TTRPG's and am looking for a new place to get back into #BallroomDancing and #Squash.
