#ForestFood

Today was nice. Went out in the forest with a local guy as guide. Learned a lot about mushrooms, picked some too and fried them in a tasting session. So good! And the weather was nice too. No rain (even though it's been raining cats and dogs yesterday and today in the evening too), no sun, not too much wind, around 14°C.

Mushrooms are fascinating, and the sheer variety is astonishing. Tasty too!

#MapleSyrup update! This is what I collected this morning. That grey bucket is five gallons, for scale. I think it’s just over 2 gallons of actual #sap.

I’m told some folks toss out the ice, but when I eat it it tastes sweet to me, so I always just put it all in there.

Are you #tapping #trees this year?

Chunks of frozen maple sap piled up in a two gallon pot on the induction burner, which hilariously says "kitchen" on it in white letters on black, visible in the lower right corner of the picture. Apparently my kitchen is wherever the induction burner is. Says so right there.A grey bucket with liquid and frozen maple sap inside. It's less than half full. The bucket is sitting on the kitchen floor and my sock feet are visible in the lower half of the image. Yay wool socks!

The toyon shrubs are bursting into bloom after a good many atmospheric rivers and mild weather and now some warm weather these past few days. I haven't noticed many bees around to partake of all this nectar though. I'm looking forward to loads of red berries around Winter solstice for the birds for cider and wine.

#Found a small colony of #BlackElfinSaddle #fungi - #HelvellaDryophila 😊
Often found on forest floor but these were growing out of a bed of #moss on a dead log.
These #mushrooms are #edible when cooked. I don't eat them as I prefer other edible #WildMushrooms for cooking.
NEVER eat any wild foods that you're not 100% able to identify! Rule 1 of #WildFood foraging.
