Die Festung von Mystras thront hoch über dem Tal des Eurotas. Sie wurde im 13. Jhd von den Franken errichtet und später von den Byzantinern ausgebaut. Ihre Mauern dienten als Rückzugsort in wechselvollen Zeiten zwischen lateinischer und osmanischer Herrschaft. Trotz vielfacher Zerstörungen steht die Festung noch immer als Wahrzeichen des mittelalterlichen Peloponnes. Vom höchsten Punkt bietet sich ein weiter Blick bis Sparta.

Die Festung Methoni liegt so dicht am Meer, dass die Wellen direkt gegen ihre alten Mauern schlagen. Über Jahrhunderte hat die Brandung den Stein ausgehöhlt, kleine Höhlen und Ausbrüche hinterlassend und einige der Mauern eingerissen.

Vom Südrand der Festung führt eine schmale Brücke zum kleinen Rundturm Bourtzi, dem Wahrzeichen von Methoni. Bei stürmischem Wetter schlagen die Wellen darüber hinweg, sodass der Weg heute für mich unpassierbar bleibt. Der Turm diente einst als Wacht‑ und Verteidigungsbau, später als Gefängnis.

Zwischen den gewaltigen Mauern des Kastells spannen sich steinerne Bögen in allen Formen. Der Ort erzählt von unterschiedlichen Eroberern und Zeiten, von Venezianern, Osmanen und Griechen. Heute habe ich das Glück, ganz alleine durch das weite Gelände und die alten Mauern streifen zu dürfen.

Das venezianische Kastro von Methoni zählt zu den größten Küstenfestungen Griechenlands. Es entstand im 13. Jhd und ist durch eine lange Steinbrücke aus byzantinischer Zeit mit dem Festland verbunden. Jeder Schritt über das Pflaster führt ein Stück in die Geschichte des Mittelmeerhandels zurück.

Vom höchsten Punkt der Festung öffnet sich ein Panoramablick über die gesamte Küstenlinie. Die Lagune glitzert im Gegenlicht, hinter ihr wölbt sich das Meer tiefblau in der Ferne. Das Innere zwischen den bröckelnden Mauern ist mit viel Gestrüpp überwachsen und eher unzugänglich; aber die Wehrmauern selbst sind mit etwas Vorsicht begehbar und bieten einen fantastischen Ausblick.

🏰 A huge abandoned "fortress" in the desert, #Jordan

Rising from the sands of the Wadi Rum desert, this fortress is not an ancient ruin but an abandoned TV set. Built for the short-lived gameshow Les Forges du Désert (2001), designed to mimic a historic stronghold. If you know what Crystal Maze is, it was very much like that!

Die Festung Paleokastro stammt vermutlich schon aus byzantinischer Zeit und wurde später von Franken und Venezianern ausgebaut. Ihre Lage auf dem Felsen über der Bucht war strategisch ideal, um die Einfahrt in die Bucht zu kontrollieren. Auch wenn nur Ruinen geblieben sind, lassen sich Toranlagen und wehrhafte Bastionen noch gut erkennen.

Ein schmaler, steiler Pfad führt von der Bucht hinauf zu den Ruinen des alten Paleokastro. Nach Regen ist der Kalkstein rutschig, jeder Schritt braucht Aufmerksamkeit und der Aufstieg ist stellenweise eine abenteuerliche Kletterei. Der Weg windet sich zwischen struppiger Macchia und steinigem Geröll, während die Aussicht über Lagune und Meer mit jedem Meter weiter wird.

Recently our writer Mark caught up with the very talented Fili Bibiano of the band Fortress for an exclusive dive into the band and music. The band are currently celebrating the release of their brand new album “Death Is Your Master” which is the follow up to 2021’s “Don’t Spare The Wicked.” However this time around the album is fuelled by Fili Bibiano as well as new members Joey Mancaruso (drums) and Juan Aguila (vocals). Fili is known for his musical talents with Fortress as well as Intranced (featuring James-Paul Luna (known for Holy Grail and White Wizzard). But now it is clear that he wants to bring Fortress more into the spotlight and take the band worldwide!

Auf einem Hügel über Kyllini erhebt sich das festungsartige Kastro Chlemoutsi, im frühen 13. Jhd von den fränkischen Kreuzfahrern errichtet. Die Burg war strategisch wichtig, um den westlichen Zugang zur Peloponnes zu sichern. Die massiven Mauern und Türme spiegeln den Übergang von byzantinischer zu westeuropäischer Wehrarchitektur.

#Fortress (2021) is an abysmal movie.

The protagonist, with whom we are apparently meant to sympathize, being a cryptocurrency scammer trying to fleece his parent for more money, was not a good start, and it went downhill from there. Pretty much everyone's acting was either completely over the top or wooden as Hell. The plot was ludicrous; the ubiquitous special effects mist and random camera angles, annoying.

The final straw, at which point I just stopped and deleted it from the TiVo, was when the character who had been speaking with a vaguely Australian accent for the entire movie until that point apologized to another character for putting on a British accent.

Apparently, they made a sequel at the same time. Avoid both.
