Baltimore-area friends and followers, I'm honored to have been invited to present a record for Essential Tremors' Selector Series this Wednesday night. It's a series where an artist presents a record, which is played through an audiophile-quality sound system, and talks a bit about it.
The record I've chosen is Hamza El Din's
Escalay (the Water Wheel)
and it's at
Idle Hour, 201 E Fort Ave
starting at 7pm.

Author of the book "When the Drummers were Women" Layne Redmond (August 19, 1952 – October 28, 2013).
Layne was an American drummer, frame drum expert, writer, teacher, historian, and mythologist. Drum maker Remo created a frame drum designed by Redmond as their first Signature Series product.
The February 2000 issue of Drum! listed Redmond as one of the 53 Heavyweight Drummers Who Made A Difference in the 1990s, where she is ranked among such musicians as Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Zakir Hussain, Elvin Jones and Mickey Hart.
She is the only woman on this list, and she is the only drummer on the list whose work focuses on the spiritual and healing dimensions of drumming and rhythm

I have neighbours, and often busy early evenings and live with people who dislike loud noises, so I'm experimenting with making easy to put on and take off muffles for frame drums.
This is a 16" Remo (3" sides). I just cut a 24" circle of fabric (a wool/viscose mix, I tested others) and stitched a little drawstring loop for some elastic, job done.
You can hear if you land the stroke correctly but its all soft thud/puh! noises, less satisfying but a considerate practice method :)
Mooi muziekje om het weekend mee af te sluiten. Ollin Arageed- Hamza el Din. Kun je het ritme meeklappen?
