I wrote up a huge review of this book because it brings up a lot of interesting ideas and questions regarding the value of souls, the transactional base of Christianity, the subjugation of a congregation at the hands of a power-hungry priesthood, and whether we as humans have been sold a twisted and warped tale of a deity for the sake of power and control rather than the potential truth of an all-knowing, all-seeing, and (most importantly) an all-loving god.
But it was really long and religion is such a hot-button topic that I think it’s safer for everyone’s sanity to instead recommend you read the book (it’s not insanely long, though there are definitely parts to stop and ponder at) and see what your feelings are.
I WILL say that in the 1990s parents petitioned school and public libraries to either remove or not stock Goosebumps books because of violence, death, and satanic imagery - none of which were in the series. When asked why they thought parents were petitioning, a librarian said they thought it was because parents were just reading the titles of books rather than the actual books.
I say this because I genuinely hope you don’t dismiss this as anything more or less than a harsh critique of the organized faith of Christianity for various reasons rather than, you know, anything particularly anti-Christ if that makes sense.

While on vacation - for funsies - Nietzsche decides to absolutely DRAG the established heroes of philosophy and, in the process, actually makes some really good points.
It’s an interesting read, particularly if you like philosophy. I don’t think that loving philosophy is a requirement, though - anyone can enjoy this (short) book with very little previous knowledge of philosophical history.
And hey! At the end of it, you can brag to your friends that you read Nietzsche while also broadening your perspective, opening your mind to new ideas, and finding out that drama exists in every field and in every era of human existence and history. This is the Mean Girls of philosophy and that makes it pretty fun.

De bundel van Piet Gerbrandy die ter sprake komt is diens laatste bundel: Niets dan dit (Uitgeverij Atlas Contact, 2023). De bundel werd bekroond met de Ida Gerhardt Poëzieprijs 2024. Niets dan dit is ook als audioboek te vinden op Spotify, De gedichten worden door de dichter zelf voorgedragen.
