One morning a couple of years ago I found a young flying fox tangled in the net that covered our nectarine tree. We looked at each other from about a metre away, through the net, she was upside down & looked like a small black cat. She was so clearly sentient, exhausted & asking for help. I called the local wildlife rescue & a lovely woman came - this was before 7am on a Saturday. She told me to look into little bat’s eyes & tell her everything will be ok - just as I would to a cat - while she cut the net from the tree. She then spent two hours disentangling the poor creature from the nylon strands, holding her on her lap & speaking softly to her until she relaxed. The little creature stayed a month with a foster carer until her broken wing tip healed, then was released back into the colony she came from. We don’t net our fruit trees anymore.
Let’s be kind to our bats 🦇. Support our local wildlife rescue. And recognise that their volunteers do skilled & magical work.
