Don't forget to factor in the wind when you're laying out future plans for veggie gardens, fruit trees, etc. This spring, our extremely prolific apple tree began blossoming, but then a super strong wind came through and blew all the blossoms away. I thought some would grow, but no, they have not. The squirrels, rabbits & many different birds depend on that tree for their winter food. I'm bummed, but not as bummed as they will be.

The Santa Rosa plum air layering has made roots! It's been 11 weeks since it was started. It should make a standard sized tree if it survives. I put it in a pot for now so I can be kept wet and out of the hot sun if necessary and figure out where I want to plant it.

The wrapped plum branch. It is clear cling type wrap around moss and dirt and stuff with the top and bottom ends sealed with black splicing tape. Roots are visible through the plastic. The root ball after it was cut from the tree and all the plastic wrap and tape removed. The roots are white and some of the moss is visible. It is sitting on top of the gallon bag pot it will be planted in. There are wood handled loppers in the background.A photo of the tree after being planted in the pot and tied to a stake with green tie tape that is stretchy. It's about 3 feet tall or one meter.

Picking black and white #mulberries today. Hoping to make jam/preserves this weekend.

I only got a couple cups of white, the black mulberries are on the bottom.

We only have one white mulberry tree.

OMG GUYS
We have so many Apples 🍎 🍏 forming on our two juvenile (as opposed to newly planted) apple trees!! The Blushing Delight Columnar has the most. It is the most vigorous though and most protected from the wind, but the Northern Spy has many as well!!

This is the first year any of our new trees since the pandemic have borne fruit.

My baby cashew is flowering for the first time today. Cashews are in the top 5 of my favourite fruit trees to grow. I love the entire Anacardiaceae family. I hope this baby grows big and bountiful.

Absolutely love the Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) trees. We’ve put three in the property thus far. Not only are their fruits medicinal, high in vitamins, great for skin and hair, but the trees just have so much character and grace to them.

It's beautiful to see farmers work on the soil, giving it so much love for a good harvest year.

Should see some open bloom on the Gravenstein apples this coming week. At the 'late pink' stage.

The Brooks plum, Comice pear, and Bosc pear will bloom this year. They were planted last spring. Not sure if I can keep any fruit on the pears, but the plum should be able to support a few fruit.

Updated with photo, for what it's worth.

I got out yesterday after work and wrapped my fruit trees and currant bush, but I forgot about my raspberry and gooseberry bushes (luckily it didn't end up freezing last night). I don't have any way to get any sort of cover over them, and it is supposed to be in the 20sF early tomorrow, Tuesday morning.

I'm not what sure do. I guess I could set an alarm for some time in the middle of the night to check the temperature, then if it is trending below 30°F, run the hose spray over the bushes, hopefully making ice that would coat their leaves at 32°F rather than dipping below that.

Another option would be to put one of my temperature sensors out near the berry bushes to see what kind of microclimate I've got there, and then if that drops, protect them with the water. Those bushes are generally more protected by structures and the lay of the land than everything is out front. Maybe that area won't hit the freezing mark?

This is #Kansas, so I'm used to losing fruit crops because the weather in April didn't cooperate.

This dip tonight means we likely won't get any peaches or pears from local trees unless farmers go to extremes to try to keep those from freezing. I don't remember having Kansas peaches more than one time over the last 10 years because of April freezes.

Peaches seem to be the most sensitive, which is part of why I've never planted a peach tree. 😞

A sunny and bright native plant filled front garden in which you can see two covered raised beds, a small cherry tree with a pillowcase over it, my plum tree with a cardboard box around the trunk and a sheet taped over that with blue tape, and my giant clove current bush with two large cardboard boxes around the base and a mattress pad taped over the top. I'm leaving these covered today in spite of the warmer afternoon because it's supposed to be a lot colder tonight. Also in the shot are my gorgeous, single-trunked redbud tree that I've babied and pruned to this shape since it was a foot tall (they get weird and gnarly if your don't), and the Ukraine flag flying the flag pole angling diagonally off the porch. On the left of the shot is just a glimpse of the old ornate porch pillar on which the flag flies and at the top of the shot is a glimpse of very faded Tibetan prayer flags. I direct people to my house with the simple phrase, "it is the one with all the flags on it." Not pictured are my Gilbert Baker design pride flag, and my United Federation of Planets flag. No Doubt if Google maps were updated, you'd be able to find me easily. Heh. Secret pass phrase is: I've got nothing but Fedi for you.

An air layering attempt on the old Santa Rosa plum. Harvested the sphagnum moss from the rock seen in the background. Now we wait.

Yes, I could just buy another Santa Rosa plum but then it's not THIS plum. This also ignores the fact that the chances of getting the same plum is near zero because "looks like" is more important than "actually is" in the buy a plant world these days.

A photo showing a small limb on a plum tree that has had a blob of plastic and rubber added to it. What created this was freshly harvested sphagnum moss mixed with some dirt that came along with it and a little dirt and wood ash, then soaked in water. This was secured around the de-barked limb with some narrow plastic wrap and then it was covered with some wide plastic wrap to make 3 layers. The top and bottom was sealed with some splicing tape. The whole thing wrapped tight with narrow wrap, then more splicing tape on the ends. The goal is to retain the moisture of the sphagnum moss for a couple of months if it takes that long.

The Comice pear, the oldest Gravenstein apple, an early blooming peach grown from seed, and the Harcot Apricot. I saw quite a few apricots blooming when I was out and about today. The Japanese type plum here is a couple of warm days away from starting to bloom and it doesn't look like it's died much more. It's more than 50 years old.
