🕊️THE FOUNDING OF FUSHIMI INARI🌾

Hata-no-Irogu (秦伊呂具) had amassed such wealth that he could afford to use large (dried) cakes of pounded rice as targets for his archery practice.

One day the rice cake target transformed into a large white bird and flew off.
Irogu hastily followed.

✨THE RICE GOD COMETH🌾

Today is the 'first day of the horse' (it falls some time around the start of February each year).

Hatsuuma (初午) celebrates the arrival of Inari Ōkami (稲荷大神), god of rice, prosperity, agriculture and industry, fertility, saké and rice, on Mt Inari in 711.

Red Japanese torii gates among branches and trees in the foreground
Fushimi Inari Taisha, or the shrine of the 10,000 Torii Gates ⛩️It’s a spectacular maze of different paths that goes 4km long up a nearby hill - so you enjoy quite a hike while you’re surrounded by these vermillion gates.

As you know, these Torii Gates ⛩️ made out of painted wood indicate the entrance to a sacred space. In this case, they’re dedicated to the gods of wine and sake, which represent fortune and success in business. Each of them is an offering by a local or national Japanese company expecting success in return – you can read on each gate the name of the company which has donated it. So even though the shrine is very old, each gate itself is rather new, as they’re changed every 10 to 20 years. For instance, the one next to my face in the first picture is from 2009. It’s written with complicated kanji, but you can find out using Google translate’s camera feature, which saves the lives of every foreigner in Japan every day.

There are so many of them that at some parts of the way they almost completely cut out the light coming from the outside, creating a mysterious and ethereal tunnel that extends beyond the eye’s reach. The beauty of this place is really beyond question, especially if you go there early enough to avoid the crowds. It’s open 24/7 so you can also come here in the night but I somehow didn’t dare.

These photos are from when we visited the Fushimi Inari Shrine in January 2023. The main shrine is at the base of the hill a short walk from the train station, but the torii gates extend all the way to the top of the mountain. You can spend hours exploring the trails here and it's beautiful, but be aware the walking trails are not wheelchair accessible. There are many many steps.
