#Fynbos

A fringed pagoda (my guess, not a specialist) peeking through the evening mist. This tree's bark can protect it against wildfires that are common in fynbos regions. Might also be the reason it's missing most its leaves.

The Cape Peninsula in South Africa is a global biodiversity hotspot, home to the world’s highest density of tortoises, over 250 bird species, and around 9,000 plant species—69% of which are endemic. Despite covering less than 0.5% of Africa, it holds nearly 20% of the continent’s flora, with 1,736 plant species threatened and 3,087 of conservation concern.

A mountain pool refuge for bubbles in a hasty stream.

For those with a keen eye for detail, the water is a reddish brown colour caused by the Fynbos flora through which it flows

A photo of a mountain pool surrounded by walls covered in plants hanging over the pool.
The surface of the pool is covered in fine white foam shaped in patterns by the flow of the river. Movement of the water is from top left to bottom right
The water visible below the foam is a dark reddish brown colour

Although I saw 35 ‘lifers’ today, 1 stopped me in my tracks - the Orange-breasted Sunbird. Wow such colours. The young Boomslang snake was a good spot too.

Helderberg nature reserve in Somerset West.

This bit of paradise sits on the edge of the City of Cape Town metro area.

A massive fire tore through here a few years ago, but the fynbos is doing what fynbos does: regenerating spectacularly.

@cybersyndrome I hadn’t heard of it before. I’m geofenced out of using the #Fynbos service, however. “Country not yet supported. Join the waitlist.” I see that @Jeremiah is on it, he might have some thoughts.
