Had reason to reminisce about the wonderful bike trip in 2017 riding the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath. What an incredible experience! bikestylelife.com/2017/11/01/b

I'm contemplating a bike tour between Washington DC and Pittsburgh along the GAP and C&O canal towpath. It's 333 miles total and virtually all trail. There is Amtrak bike service along the route, meaning I could bike one way and take the train back. Lots of variables up in the air now so just curious if anyone out there has done this ride or has tips.

My 2023 bike tour is complete. PGH to Wash DC to Richmond, VA and then DC to New Haven, CT. 1,059 miles and zero flats. Lots of interesting sights. Really enjoyed riding across bridges I'd only previously drive across. Big thanks to the #EastCoastGreenway and the #GAPTrail and the #CandOCanalTrail #BikeTooter #bicycling

GAP Trail and C&O Canal Towpath Trail finished. Great few days riding. Saw lots of wildlife - mostly deer, fawns, rabbits and whistle pigs but also a fox, raccoons, a rattlesnake and a few Great Blue Herons. #BikeTooter #bicycling #biketouring #GAPTrail #CandOCanal

Some fun fun fungi were about 10 feet from our camp site at RoundBottom on Monday night. We arrived late and after wading in the Youghiogheny river a bit decided eventually that it was too cold to swim. More precisely it was too cold to be wet along the walk back from the river. Slept comfortably in a tent under the Adirondack shelter. At least 6 different varieties of birds volunteered for the job of waking us up in the morning with song.

A stump or possibly squat log sitting on the ground surrounded by a big variety of low growing plants like a lawn. Flat brown mushrooms with white edges patchily cover half the top and creep down one side. Their tight stacks resemble gills or feathers on a plump chicken.Four large fungi along the base of a dead tree set surrounded by low plants. Each tan mushroom is irregularly wrinkled and looks almost like a cabbage. My foot in the frame shows that they're about ten inches wide.

Adandoned and then heavily tagged coal processing plant.

View from inside deteriorated heavy concrete structure. Large openings reveal glowing green woodlands past the walls. Various spray paint art, mostly in blue and neon green cover much of the interior.

My newly 15yo son and I are leaving tomorrow morning to bike about 350 miles to DC over the next 6-7 days. We'll be camping some nights and hosteling and whatnot other nights. I'm hoping to live toot during the week, so mute if you don't want to get get that flood.

We've never done anything like this before and we're grateful to friends who've advised us and loaned gear.

I can not describe how excited I am!

Lovely day so far on the Great Allegheny Passage. Found a nice little overlook over the Yough River. Bike is handling great so far. #BikeTooter #bicycling #biketouring #GAPTrail

An old bridge turned into a scenic overlook over the Yough River with a loaded touring bike on it. There are kayaker and rafters floating in the river.

A stop on the #GapTrail educates bike riders about #Kennywood with wonderful views of Phantoms Revenge. A week from now the coaster will be testing for the second full day of park ops for the 2023 season

A weird crossover, but anyone who loves #rollercoasters and #bikes, the #GapTrail runs directly next to #Kennywood on the way to D.C.

Just discovered Pittsburgh, PA has a combination Bicycle Museum and Bike Shop called Bicycle Heaven. I plan to visit when I ride the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Trails. Looks like they have some very cool bikes. Check them out - they could use your support to help recover from a flood over the holidays.

A beautiful overlook just south of the Big Savage Tunnel along the Great Allegheny Passage. This alone was worth the trip.

What I love about rail trails is the history you roll through.

This abutment is all that remains of an old pre-WW2 road (or rail? coal chute?) bridge. Aside from satellite imagery, there's nothing remaining of this road. It's too small to show on topo maps and I can't find a list of Maryland LIDAR captures.

If you want to figure it out yourself, this was at 39°42'38.7"N 78°54'40.0"W

A wide bike trail cuts a straight line through a thick mountain forest. An old, decaying, concrete bridge abutment flanks the trail. It has not been used in decades, possibly 50 years or more. The tree canopy mostly blocks out the sky.

I'm still building up my endurance, so last summer I rode the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) in segments. This summer I'm hoping to ride it all in one shot. Here's the gentle descent into Cumberland MD.

A paved bike trail follows a rail line across a rusty metal bridge as it cuts through a valley marked with high stone cliffs. The sky is a perfect shade of blue with no clouds visible.

Happy #Caturday to Arbee, the cat who kept me toasty on our 1st night on the #GAPTrail . We settled in the shelter well after 10pm, the campground empty except for us. Then the tiniest "mew" made us scramble for headlamps. This little fluffy-tailed creature materialized out of the darkness. She was incredibly affectionate and denied my request to stop making biscuits on my sleeping bag. If I had figured out how to carry her w/ me for 5 more days I would have #bikes #bikepacking #CatsOfMastodon
