#WindTurbines are huge advantages to society in terms of energy, limiting #airpollution and #GHG, and bringing positive habitat development to marine and Lake environments. Very minimal impact on birds.

I was happy to participate as a #VTTFinland representative to #GenesisEU consortium meeting at Neuchâtel. This meeting was hosted by #CSEM. It was really impressive to see the technologies they have been working with and helped to commercialise. The main focus of the meeting was of course to have deep tech discussions related to project scope and amazing solutions and tech we are developing within the consortia to help the monitoring and reduction of the #GHG and #PFAS emissions. The Genesis project is a Horizon Europe CHIPS JU flagship project.

estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions vs the amount of warming they can cause

"If we want to limit warming to around 1.5°C, we must achieve net zero emissions in the second half of the century (blue line). According to all the climate pledges, scientists’ best estimate of warming would be around 2°C (purple line). Pledging countries must create climate policies to reduce emissions further. If we estimate only based on current policies, the world will not reduce emissions fast enough (orange area) and global warming will go well over 2°C, leading to worse climate impacts."

Low fire risk landscapes
Challenging the norm of prescribed burning

* "Research shows long-unburnt forests act to limit fire without human intervention – even as the climate changes."

"Would it be worth removing the short-term defence of prescribed burning to bring forests back to a less flammable state?"

"In our new study, we examined whether phasing out prescribed burning could help Australian forests endure climate change. The answer was clear: it’s entirely possible to stop the cycle of fire feeding more fire, and help forests endure new climatic conditions."

European Geosciences Union: Assessing the Detection of Methane Plumes in Offshore Areas Using High-Resolution Imaging Spectrometers (21 Oct 2025) - amt.copernicus.org/articles/18

This is a brilliant article using data from space-based spectrometers #EnMAP and #EMIT to detect and quantify #methane plumes offshore.

The oceans' low reflectivity makes detection harder, but using data when solar light is reflected to the sensor works as well as land.

If you want to act due to climate change and spend your money into your home region, you should consider bying an electric car. If possible produced in your home country.

Electric cars have 73% less GHG emissions over their lifetime.

Mary Kang (Civil Engineering, McGill) gave us an entertaining and possibly hopeful talk (despite the topic) focused on quantifying fugitive methane emissions. One disturbing figure: their survey of inactive (non-producing wells) suggests continuing methane emissions seven times that of Canada's National Inventory Report. Hopeful in that much of these emissions are from a fraction of the total wells and therefor easier to stop.

"Why are the targets for reducing emissions not being met or now even agreed? The answer is money. Despite the harm, the world’s governments provided $956bn in direct fossil fuel subsidies in 2023."

"The world’s 100 largest fossil fuel companies increased their projected production in the year up to March 2025, which would lead to carbon dioxide emissions three times those compatible with the Paris climate agreement target of limiting heating to 1.5C above preindustrial levels, the report says. Commercial banks are supporting this expansion, with the top 40 lenders to the fossil fuel sector collectively investing a five-year high of $611bn in 2024. Their ‘green sector’ lending was lower at $532bn."

The Race to Save the Amazon: Top Brazilian Scientist Says Rainforest Is at "Tipping Point"

Democracy Now! interview:

As we broadcast from the COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil, we are joined by one of Brazil’s most prominent scientists, Carlos Nobre, who says the Amazon now produces more carbon emissions than it removes from the atmosphere, moving closer to a “tipping point” after which it will be impossible to save the world’s largest rainforest. “We need urgently to get to zero deforestation in all Brazilian biomes, especially the Amazon,” he argues.

Nobre is a senior researcher at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the University of São Paulo and co-chair of the Scientific Panel for the Amazon. He’s lead author of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for its reports on global warming.

↙️ Making hydrogen via methane pyrolysis has been attempted since the good work by Kvaerner in the 1990s. Monolith has the Kvaerner IP & a US plant, which has now been mothballed.↘️

It's not emission free: don't forget that the delivered natgas still has all those pesky upstream GHG emissions, plus some process #GHG #CO2.

AND, what is the value of the solid carbon byproduct; & will it flood the graphite / CNT market & depress prices??

"It is not uncommon for an analyst to conduct a supervised analysis of data to detect which predictors are significantly associated with the outcome. These significant predictors are then used in a visualization (such as a heat map or cluster analysis) on the same data. Not surprisingly, the visualization reliably demonstrates clear patterns between the outcomes and predictors and appears to provide evidence of their importance. However, since the same data are shown, the visualization is essentially cherry picking the results that are only true for these data and which are unlikely to generalize to new data."
