Three of about a dozen images from an 1865 article about spiritists, people using mediums to communicate with the dead. Hugely popular in the 1860s.

The article purports to be a translate of an English factual account, bt i found no trace of it.

We see a heading, Les Spirites (the spirists), drawn as if from the back of a stage or platform in a dimly-lit room or theatre. There’s a large audience, but on stage maybe half a dozen people kneeling on either side of a table with a drawer, facing the table, on which are dancing three giant beetles with antlers, one with a bell, one with a tambourine, one with a guitar.

At first I thought this chest of drawers was a robot, although in 1865 that seemed unlikely. It has a face made from places where there would normally be drawers: two eyes and a mouth, and a nose and maybe moustache and eyebrows have appeared. The drawers are flying through the air towards the spectators, one of whom has rabbit ears, another with an upside-down chicken feeder on his or her head.

The dresser, or chest of drawers, has extended a hand and is perhaps pouring out a jug of milk.

A man with a large nose and a top hat and a wand is blowing at the flame in a lantern that he holds in one hand.

What is the nearest boy holding? The leftmost one has the censer to spread incense, so presumably a Roman Catholic church.

The original 1890s oil painting sold in 2006 for $56K or so.

In a dark candle-lit church, a bespectacled man holding a baton is leading a choir of boys in white surplices. The boys are not actually looking at the conductor, and are perhaps drowned out by the bassoon and the tuba in their midst. The front boy (on our left) holds a thurible, or censer, suggesting that this is either a Roman Catholic or high church Protestant service. The boy nearest to us holds what might be a hat. We can dimly make out faces behind the choir.

In more detail: the dragon stands on the ground in the foreground with its mouth open, tongue extended, tail coiled, wings partly lifted. It faces the bearded knight, in leather armour, who wields a sword over the dragon’s head and holds a shield, a cape flowing behind him. There are trees on either side to frame the woodcut, and in the background a lake and behind that a castle on a hill.

It could almost be Neuschwanstein castle, and i think it very likely that was the intent.

I don’t know a lot about the artist here, Eugen Ludwig Hoess (1855 – 1955), beyond what i put in the notes; copyright ended on his work this January. He was best known for his work in Jugend magazine, including this one, and his theme of people living in nature.

Jugend was the Ray Gun Magazine of the 1900s.

Children with an adult, perhaps their mother, carrying small baskets and filling them with strawberries they are picking in the woods. Actually they look more like flowers than berries to me, and the wild strawberries i have seen are much smaller.

In this colour painting from around 1903 we see the children wearing aprons, the tree trunks, and beyond, open countryside, probably farmland, a tower, a distant church spire and perhaps a small village, and, further some hills.
