Das elegante Schwingen der Milchstraße
„Unsere Galaxie flattert wie ein Schmetterling.“ Nach Beobachtungen der ESA-Mission Gaia, „schlägt” oder „wogt” die Milchstraße „mit den Flügeln“.
Es wäre allerdings ein seehhr laaangsamer Schmetterling. Meist bewegen Schmetterlinge die Flügel mit 10 bis 15 Schlägen pro Sekunde. Manche Arten wie das Taubenschwänzchen „schwirren“ sogar, indem sie die Flügel bis zu 80-mal pro Sekunde bewegen, ähnlich wie Kolibris.
Das Universum mag es beim Schwingen viel langsamer. Die Auf und Ab Bewegung ähnelt eher der eines Rochen, der sich mit seinen flügelartigen Brustflossen ruhig und elegant wellenförmig durchs Wasser bewegt. Sich dabei allerdings nicht dreht wie unsere Spiralgalaxie.
Die Milchstraße – die Galaxie, in der sich das Sonnensystem mit der Erde befindet – ist also mit ihren Hunderten von Milliarden Sternen keine flache Scheibe.
Sie rast dabei nicht nur mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 600 km/s durchs Weltall, sondern schwingt auch noch ästhetisch und langsam wie ein schwimmendes oder fliegendes Lebewesen.
600 Kilometer pro Sekunde entsprechen etwa 2,16 Millionen Kilometer pro Stunde. Etwas flotter als der schnellste Ferrari… 🙂

Die Gaia Mission
Die Gaia-Mission entdeckte, dass sich die vermeintliche Scheibe nicht nur dreht, sondern gleichzeitig auch biegt, wobei sich vertikale Wellen über Zehntausende von Lichtjahren über die äußere Scheibe ausbreiten.
Genau wie die Erde die Sonne umkreist, umkreist unser Sonnensystem das Zentrum der Milchstraße. Diese Galaxie ist so riesig, dass unser Sonnensystem etwa 250 Millionen Jahre für eine einzige Umdrehung benötigt – ein sogenanntes galaktisches Jahr.
Der Warp der Milchstraße
Die Verbiegung (Warp) bewegt sich um das Zentrum der Milchstraße und vollführt eine Umdrehung in 600 bis 700 Millionen Jahren. Das ist deutlich langsamer als die Geschwindigkeit, mit der die Sterne in der Scheibe das galaktische Zentrum umkreisen und wirkt dadurch anmutig und ästhetisch.
Galaktischer Warp
Die Galaxienscheibe liegt nicht in einer flachen Ebene, sondern verbiegt sich senkrecht zur Ebene in eine S-Form. Dies wird in der Astronomie als Warp bezeichnet. [Hat nichts nicht Cpt. Kirk zu tun 😉 ]
Warps finden sich häufig in den äußeren Bereichen von Spiralgalaxien, besonders in den wasserstoffreichen, sternarmen Randgebieten.
Als Hauptursachen gelten die gravitative Wechselwirkung und Verschmelzung mit kleineren Zwerggalaxien, die zu einem Drehimpulsübertrag führen. Oder auch der Einfluss von Dunkler Materie.
Warps wurden erstmals 1976 von Renzo Sancisi in Galaxien in Kantenlage beobachtet.
Das kann man auch in der simulierten Bewegung sehen. Wobei die Jahre Millionenweise am Betrachter vorbei rauschen. Bitte sehr:

Die Milchstraße
Von der Erde aus ist die Milchstraße als bandförmige Aufhellung am Nachthimmel sichtbar, die sich über 360° auf der Himmelskugel erstreckt. Ihrer Struktur nach zählt die Michstraße zu den Balkenspiralgalaxien.

Since the Witch will make lake freighter traffic inconvenient for a few days, the sea cans will start rolling out via road delivery. The shipping season will close at the end of the year and re-open start of April. So we’ll ship what we can by sea freighter, then switch just to road for the winter, picking up sea freight again in spring.”

We took the short walk to the mine head, then the elevator and golf cart downstairs to Mica’s home. We ignored the Ultors posted at various checkpoint locations, and they ignored us. They were all aspects of Mica after all. Once securely in Mica’s cab, I continued the conversation.

“No, but some test articles were probably hidden away. Remember, we are probably dealing with some very devious, and powerful, people.”

“Variable, up to 200 kilotons. Not something you want detonated within 10 kilometres of where you happen to be.” Mica got up, ready to head to the mine. “But I’m working on a solution that will open some opportunities. Let’s walk.”

“The storm has started,” Mica told me one morning over my breakfast. “I’m tracking an interesting freighter on the lake. It just cleared the Straits of Mackinac, originating in Chicago.”
“Cargo?” I asked.
“Something quite small and torpedo shaped, with a suspicious radiation signature.”
“A nuclear fusion bomb?”
