Should players have complete control over a game's story?

Some designers prefer responding to player decisions with surprise and entertainment.

"...we all hold secrets in our hearts that we do not wish to be revealed to the world, and these characters are no different."

What secrets do your characters hide?

Find the clues in my essay “The Case of the Mystery Game Writer” in the new collection “Game Narrative Kaleidoscope”.

Story engineering: A look at conflict, causation, progress, and transformation as ways to set the stage, keep things moving, show how far the reader has come, and give everything meaning.

Building stories one line of code at a time.

@tracefree For the last few years I've been feeling that every game must seriously explain why its main character is killing people on a regular basis as part of their typical activities.

Nothing wrong with characters who end up killing someone, but that should be a major plot point in the overall narrative every time. If that's something that regular people in this word just do, I want to see the game acknowledge how fucked up its world is.

Viel Spaß!

Baldur's Gate 3's dialogue is a staggering feat—over 2 million words mapped out in a branching tree so complex it looks like a whole brain.

Actor Maggie Robertson says the depth of choices gave her a headache!

Baldur's Gate 3's dialogue tree is so vast and complex it looks like a whole brain, with millions of words and endless branching paths.

Actress Maggie Robertson called it a headache but praised its depth in storytelling.

It’s already the middle of NaNoWriMo, and I’m curious what you’re working on! I spent two NaNoWriMos writing the 100K+ words that are in Terranova (wow, that’s a lot!). It was the first big project that I took on, and I can't tell you how many rounds of editing I went through. It's one of my most edited works because I was so concerned about getting it right.

Excited to start writing my next Twine game 🎉 First draft of the opening passage, so forgive any typos, repetitive worlds and other imperfections.

A screenshot of a Twine passage called "The Beginning". It says: You crouch behind a trea as a projectile swishes by your ear. Smoke tickles your nostrils, cries echo in the air, and your head swims in the sweltering heat of a burning forest. It hurts as if your own body were burning, even though the flames haven't touched your skin yet.

As you lean your forehead against the trunk and inhale its rich aroma, your mind intermingles with the mind of the tree, signals of pain and panic traveling up its roots from the vast network below.

You bite your lip until it bleeds, as tears stream from your eyes. Your sole purpose in life has been to protect the Forest, but you have failed.
