A game I had vague memories of when I was in my early teens, and have now beaten, was a #Gameboy game named Mercenary Force.
A friend of mine had this, and when we hung out, we would cartridge swap games because no kid had a huge library of games unless their parents were super into games.
So you'd soft trade with friends to experience more things.
Anyway, Mercenary Force. Honestly, I don't play many shoot em ups. Vertical or horizontal, but this one stuck in my mind.
You start the game buying a team of four mercenaries, with different shooting patterns and HP pools, and try to save the local lord who is under siege from the forces of evil.
Your team moves as a group, as you shift between a variety of formations, and you blast through enemy hoards and hope to evade an onslaught of bullets. My inexperience of the genre sees this as quite unique!
Very heavy on the Japanese folklore as well, which you might not guess from the box art!
Just when I thought I was reaching the end of my #DOOM console port hellhole, I noticed there was a #PS1 port of Final Doom!
Consider me excited! Initially...
The Doom 2 portion of PS1 Doom is a very neutered version of the original. No Archviles, a handful of levels cut, even newer monsters make scant appearances. Very few Revenants, Mancubi and Arachnotrons. But, I hope you like Hell Knights!
So, looking at Final Doom, I was wondering what they did with some of the Casali Brothers maps. Well! Turns out Final Doom PS1 takes maps from The Master Levels as well as TNT and Plutonia. In fact, there are only about 30 levels in all. With Plutonia getting a pultry 6 levels as representation!
Something tells me that Final Doom is going to be a very sad experience...
At least it isn't Doom 2 on GBA!
Initially I told myself I wouldn't.
But after I had finished #Doom on #PlayStation I went back and decided to attempt some of the harder challenges on #RetroAchievements list for PS1 Doom.
Clear a stage with 100% kills only using the berserk power ups on Hurt me Plenty or higher.
Killing one of every enemy in the game with a chainsaw
Defeating the Cyberdemon on Tower of Babel with only using your fists (And Monster Infighting).
There is even speed run challenges of beating Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 in under 2 hours each.
At first glance those achievements sound difficult, but with only a little perseverance I was able to Master Doom on PS1.
Outside of PC Doom, this is probably my favourite way to play Doom, it runs well and feels pretty damn good.
Though Nightmare Spectres can go to hell... Or double hell after I send them there with a couple of super shotgun blasts!

Something I am playing in the background is #ValkyriaChronicles2 I remember playing this when I was at University, in 2010. Shame my #PSP crapped out ages ago, fantastic device, however it seemed really finnickity and prone to issues due to the internals being delicate.
Anyway, this is less about the PSP and more about the #ValkyriaChronicles series.
I love VC2, though on reflection and playing it now, the bitesize missions can be nice, but they are a total slog at times. The tone can be a bit weird, with the school setting and ignoring the fact most characters are essentially child soldiers, by choice and not because the horrors of war have forced them to take arms, unless I missed something in the in-game lore. Whilst there are emotional moments, it all feels a bit... Odd.
This will be a satisfying game to finish, especially with RetroAchievements logging my progress on a 100% completion. But it will be months before that happens.
So I had a bad idea.
I was looking at the #MajorasMask achievement list over at Retroachievements.org, and there is an achievement for beating the game in a single 3-day cycle.
Obviously, this would be after the initial Deku only cycle.
I am mentally planning a route for this, seeing as you would need to get to Romani Ranch before 6pm on the first day to learn Epona's song. That is some tight timing, as you need Fire Arrows to get the powder keg...
The Ikana well would also be a stumbling point, but some proper planning could help there.
Would I want to do the Romani Ranch quest as well?
There is an achievement for it, so it must be doable, but do I see myself as good enough to achieve this myself? I could try routing this with the 3 hearts only challenge too! Mostly because suffering is something I seem go enjoy...
#DOOM on the #SegaSaturn is a strange beast. It has an interesting development story regarding John Carmack and his meddling, which has resulted in a... Muddy experience.
The game is the same as the PlayStation version, but there are fewer bells and whistles, most notably, lighting effects, and general visuals are a downgrade. If i said Doom on PlayStation was dark in places... OH BOY.
Movement feels slow, a little sluggish, making certain platforming moments a chore. A contrast from the Playstation's slippery movement.
There can be moments of slowdown as levels get more and more complex, not unplayable but noticeable and a little frustrating.
Much like the 3DO versions, enemies seem quite passive at times, and projectiles move slower than expected. But Doomguy is hyped on adrenaline, and his fire rate seems double the normal speed. The chainsaw in this version is a beast!

Recently, I have been pushing myself to play through games, I say push, for the most part, I enjoy it. But never have I wanted to drop a game faster than #DOOM2 on the #GBA. If I consider the first one to be a decent port, this one is pretty shockingly bad.
Sure, I am playing on Ultra Violence mode, the 'Gentleman's way to play Doom' (Thanks, CV11), but everything about this version is off. The controls are odd. The vertical aiming seems off. Enemy AI stop doing anything at a certain distance away, allowing you to snipe them. But the weirdest thing is the armour glitch.
For some reason, when you finish a stage, your armour % is correctly displayed but doesn't function. So I am starting a new stage with 200% armour that doesn't degrade or give me protection. Honestly, it is incredibly frustrating!
I am going to have to push through on determination alone on this one...
One thing that took me by surprise when playing #DOOM on #PS1 was the change in sounds. The sound fx in this version are the same used in Doom 64, I think.
We have fancy skyboxes and lighting effects, which can turn certain areas into an absolute nightmare when the lights are strobing wildly. The game also feels darker in general, the secret level The Marshes is obnoxiously dark for an outdoor arena.
The Cyberdemon makes an appearance! Haven't seen you since the SNES. But the Spider Mastermind doesn't appear until Doom 2, strange, any Doom veteran knows the Mastermind is the lesser of the boss demons.
Thy Flesh Consumed is a little easier in places with a lot of the Barons being replaced by Hell Knights, 2-3 rockets vs 5? That's quite a courtesy.
The controls are pretty much perfect, though at times it feels a little slippery, it makes certain "platforming" challenges a little harder than they need to be.
All in all, a damn solid port!
So in lieu of not yet finishing #DOOM on the Atari. I did beat Ultimate Doom on the #PS1. When I say Ultimate Doom, yes, this includes Episode 4: Thy Flesh Consumed. Romero, be praised. We get to play Perfect Hatred!
For the most part, I have been here before. The level layouts are the same as the majority of other console ports, but with fancy new lighting! We do have some curious additions. Monsters from Doom 2 are added into the map in strange locations! On Ultra Violence, there is now a Pain Elemental in E1M1 in one of the secret areas. There is also the Nightmare Spectre. Colour inverted Spectres who do more damage and take a beating to put down. Even a super shotgun blast doesn't reliably put them down...
There is a lot to unpack with this version, so much so I will need to do a follow-up toot!
And I am only halfway through! Doom on PS1 includes Doom 2! This gives us nearly 60 levels of Demon slaying goodness!

Took longer to get working, but I knocked out #DOOM on the #3DOInteractiveMultiplayer , a notorious port that has a really fascinating backstory to it all. Rebecca Heineman did a fantastic job, all things considered.
Compared to all other versions of Doom I have beaten in the last week, this one actually has Spectres! Joy! It makes up for the lack of Cyberdemon and Spidermastermind! (Not...)
The soundtrack to this game is bumping, though. Honestly, some great arrangements in this version. But what sacrifices must we make? Well. The game has a resolution slider to change the resolution. But anything more than screen for ants is borderline unplayable on Ultra Violence.
The enemy AI is BIZARRE as well, outside of Nightmare they are very passive, unless they are within snorting distance of you. It makes shotguns super deadly, but they are easy to keep out of blasting distance, for the most part.
#Doom on #GBA was the first proper time I played Doom seriously, and it wasn't really ideal on the old non-backlit GBA screen, but I grew up playing classic GB by lamp light.
The game has some interesting censorship going on. Green blood. ULTRA VIOLENCE is no longer a difficulty, Nightmare was basically classic UV. Some satanic references were dropped. Stuff you'd probably expect, based off Nintendo's public image.
Some levels are simplified, and graciously E3M2 Slough of Despair is omitted from the game. Though the GBA port functions allows you to carry over all your weapons between episodes, nice.
The controls are pretty decent, shoulder buttons function as dedicated directional strafe, but holding both down and pressing up and down to cycle weapons? That's rough. Especially in a heated combat.
Honestly, as far as a port goes and the fact it is portable? Damn, I love GBA Doom, so much so I mastered it on #RetroAchievements
The playlist for #CrowCountry is now up! Join me and special agent Mara Forest in a run of this excellent retro inspired horror game.
This has honestly been one of my favourite purchases for this year. It definitely hits a lot of buttons for me, and it was somewhat bird themed! How could I say no!
Episodes 4, 5, and 6 had a few technical difficulties, so I do apologise for that in advance.
